        "content": "<p>Arts Agenda<\/p>\n<p>Exhibition on Jambi's antique batik and woven songket at the<br>\nJapan Foundation, Summitmas I building, third floor, Jl.Jend.<br>\nSudirman, Central Jakarta, through Nov. 15.<\/p>\n<p>Jambi province is located between the provinces of Riau and<br>\nWest Sumatra. Jambi is believed to be an ancient administrative<br>\nand trade center in Sumatra.<\/p>\n<p>The province is rich in historical and cultural assets such as<br>\nantique ceramics, Buddhist temples, statues, stone inscriptions<br>\nand many others.<\/p>\n<p>Jambi is famous for its lavish and intricate textiles<br>\nincluding batik and songket (a double-woven textile with gold<br>\nthread embroidery).<\/p>\n<p>To show the richness of Jambi's textiles, Kajalangko Arts<br>\nCenter in Jambi in cooperation with the Japan Cultural Center is<br>\norganizing an exhibition on Jambi's antique batik and songket.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition will be followed by a discussion and a<br>\ntraditional music and entertainment show.<\/p>\n<p>Dance Performance Orang-Orang Ketiga (The Third Persons) by<br>\nEksotika Karmawibhangga Indonesia (EKI) production at Gedung<br>\nPertunjukkan Societe on Jl. Sriwedari No.1 in Yogyakarta on<br>\nNov.15 and Nov.16; and at Taman Budaya Surakarta, Jl. Ir Sutami<br>\n57, Surakarta on Nov. 19 and Nov.20 at 7.30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Orang-Orang Ketiga, choreographed by Rusdy Rukmarata, a<br>\ngraduate of the London Contemporary Dance School, tells a story<br>\nof the unfortunate people. On a large scale--in a state-- the<br>\nthird persons are the ordinary people, the little men, the<br>\nabandoned group. On a smaller scale --in a family -- these third<br>\npersons are the \"other women\" or the \"other men\" who destroy<br>\nfamilies. Servants, laborers, children out of wedlock are also<br>\nconsidered third-class society.<\/p>\n<p>\"We are classified. Everything is measured by a label. Any<br>\nhuman being--whoever she or he may be, has a right to live and to<br>\nbe loved. We have emotion,\" claimed Rusdy.<\/p>\n<p>In a 45-minute choreography, Rusdy exploits various societal<br>\nissues from male-female relationships, abortion, sexual deviants<br>\nand many others. \"Human relationship is always considered less<br>\nimportant than political activities,\" Rusdy complained.<\/p>\n<p>The performance is supported by Sujiwo Tejo as music arranger<br>\nand actor, Dian HP, Takako Leen and dozens of EKI dancers.<\/p>\n<p>EKI production will also stage the show in Bandung on Nov.10<br>\nand Nov.11.<\/p>\n<p>Dance Performance Dongeng Dari Dirah (A Tale from Dirah),<br>\nchoreographed and performed by Sardono W. Kusumo, at Galeri Cipta<br>\nII, Taman Ismail Marzuki Arts Center, Jl. Cikini Raya, Central<br>\nJakarta, from Nov.16 through Nov. 25, at 10 a.m. and 9 p.m., free<br>\nof charge<\/p>\n<p>Twenty seven years ago, a group of artists performed an<br>\nintriguing dance-theater show titled Dongeng Dari Dirah,<br>\nchoreographed by dancer-painter Sardono W. Kusumo.<\/p>\n<p>It tells the story of Calon Arang, a witch. It is set during<br>\nthe reign of the king of Kertangara of the Singasari Kingdom in<br>\nEast Java.<\/p>\n<p>Actors in the l973 show were Sardono, Hajar Satoto (now a<br>\nfamous actor), Soegeng (then a student of the Jakarta Arts<br>\nInstitute), painter and writer Danarto and I Wayan Diya.<\/p>\n<p>Now, to mark Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM)'s anniversary, the<br>\ndance will be performed again for the public for free. The<br>\nperformance is part of TIM's November Festival.<\/p>\n<p>Painting Exhibition Gambar Ajal dan Kegirangan Baru (Picture<br>\nof Death and a New Delight), by EddiE haRa and Ivan Sagito, at<br>\nGaleri Santi, Jl. Benda No.4, Cilandak Timur, Kemang, South<br>\nJakarta, through Nov.23.<\/p>\n<p>EddiE haRa and Ivan Sagito are young painters who have greatly<br>\ncontributed in the creation a new trend in the Yogyakarta fine<br>\narts world, if not in Indonesia, in the early 80s.<\/p>\n<p>EddiE's styles are naive yet sophisticated. He adopts the<br>\nstyles of world-class painters such as Jean Dubuffet, Mimmo<br>\nPaladino and A.R. Penck. He explores ideas from primitive flowers<br>\nand animals, symbols, masks and other objects.<\/p>\n<p>Ivan, on the other hand, is obsessed with surrealism. His<br>\ndrawings mostly portray a journey to conquer time. Through his<br>\ndrawings, the artist tries to picture the past, in which a series<br>\nof incidents occur.<\/p>\n<p>Dance Theater or Tanztheater: Alle der Kosmonauten<br>\nchoreographed by Sasha Waltz, at Gedung Kesenian Jakarta, Jl.<br>\nGedung Kesenian 1, Central Jakarta,<br>\non Nov. 18 and Nov.19. at 8 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Jakarta dance lovers will again be able to watch a quality<br>\nGerman dance theater Tanztheater choreographed by Sasha Waltz.<\/p>\n<p>Born in Karlsruhe 37 years ago, Waltz firstly studied dance<br>\nfrom Waltraud Komhaas. She continued her study in Amsterdam at<br>\nthe School for Dance Development and later moved to New York.<\/p>\n<p>Her work Alle de Kosmonauten has already been performed in<br>\nseveral international dance festivals.
