Artists deserve 'better treatment'<\/p>\n
DENPASAR (Antara): Balinese artists performing in public and
\nentertainment centers should receive adequate payment and should
\nbe treated properly, demanded Minister of Culture and Tourism I
\nGede Ardhika.<\/p>\n
Minister Ardhika said he was so concerned to see how the
\nBalinese artists have to work very hard and receive a very meager
\npayments from event organizers.<\/p>\n
"They performed before domestic and foreign visitors who have
\nalready paid tickets and therefore the performers must get
\nadequate fee," the minister said.<\/p>\n
Ardhika said that the additional payment should be considered
\nas appreciation to their artistic endeavors. It is also aimed at
\nimproving their professionalism.<\/p>\n
He said he saw many Balinese artists grouped in village arts
\norganization took a pick-up to a hotel. They were exposed to heat
\nand rain because there was no other transportation facilities
\nprepared by the organizers.<\/p>\n
"It will be better if the organizers provide buses or other
\nproper transportations for these artists," the minister said.<\/p>\n
An amateur artist could receive between Rp 10,000 and Rp
\n15,000 every time they perform in a hotel or other entertainment
\ncenter.<\/p>\n
A professional artist may get higher payment depending on
\nhis\/her experience and skill.<\/p>\n
The Balinese people view arts as parts of their daily and
\nreligious activities. For them, performing art activities is the
\nmanifestation of their love for their Creator and their
\ndedication to their community.<\/p>\n
But the rapid development of tourism industry has made arts a
\ntourist commodity. Many artists are now performing for money.<\/p>\n
There are more than 700 kinds of performing arts in Bali such
\nas traditional drama, dances, theaters and music.<\/p>",
