Artist Made Wianta holds retrospective display<\/p>\n
UBUD, Bali (JP): Having been involved in the local art scene
\nfor more than 30 years, renowned Balinese artist Made Wianta
\nfeels the urge to display some of his creative art works in a
\nspecial exhibition called Retrospective 1970-2000.<\/p>\n
In this exhibition, displayed in three places until the middle
\nof February, Museum Rudana in Ubud, Genta Fine Art Gallery and
\nGRP Gallery in Ubud, Wianta is displaying 200 paintings from the
\nperiod between 1970 and 2000.<\/p>\n
Born in Apuan Village in Tabanan, Wianta graduated from the
\nASRI Yogyakarta Arts Institute in l974. Wianta is one of Bali's
\nyoung artists who, at that time, was brave enough to leave
\nclassical Balinese painting styles and adopt abstract genre.<\/p>\n
Most of Wianta's works are characterized by abstract symbols
\nand forms. However, the artist's creations are imbued with a very
\nBalinese spiritual quality packaged in contemporary art form.<\/p>\n
Along with Nyoman Gunarsa, Wianta, 51, is considered the
\npioneer of Balinese contemporary art whose works have influenced
\nyounger artists like Nyoman Erawan, Wayan Sika, Nyoman Erawan,
\nBudiana and many others.<\/p>\n
Presently, Wianta's works are among the most sought-after
\npaintings among local collectors.<\/p>\n
In Jean Couteau's book entitled Art and Power, the writer
\ntells how Wianta's paintings are now collected by art lovers in
\nThailand, Japan, Australia, Germany, Luxembourg, France, and
\nBelgium.<\/p>\n
Wianta is known for his versatility. In addition to his
\nabstract painting, he has created various installation arts
\nincluding Happening Art, Art and Peace.<\/p>\n
He also wrote an anthology of his poems published by Bentang
\nBudaya foundation a few years ago.<\/p>\n
Aside from his artistic endeavors, Wianta is also known as
\nbeing social-minded. He often raises funds to support welfare
\nprojects including anti-AIDS campaigns.<\/p>\n
In l993, he donated 25 paintings to be auctioned in California
\nto help support an anti-AIDS program. (raw)<\/p>",
