Art summit hoped to offer ideas for local artists' growth<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Culture vultures have a feast in store beginning
\non Monday, with the month-long Art Summit Indonesia featuring
\nprominent local and international contemporary performing
\nartists.<\/p>\n
It's a tempting menu on offer, which includes six local
\nartists, from veteran ballet dancer-choreographer Farida Oetojo,
\nNano Riantiarno's Teater Koma to young Rachman Sabur and his
\ntheater group Payung Hitam, who will participate in the third
\nArts Summit Indonesia to be staged at the three venues of Plaza
\nSenayan, the Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM) arts center and Gedung
\nKesenian Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Foreign groups scheduled to perform include Australian
\nphysical theater troupe Strange Fruit, which opens the summit at
\n8 p.m. on Monday at Plaza Senayan, Guangdong Modern Dance of
\nChina, musician Trio Braam of the Netherlands and Tarantula
\nHypertext O'rchestra of Italy.<\/p>\n
Local artists hailed the government's consistency in staging
\nthe arts event, which had its inaugural performance in 1995 and
\nhas been held every three years since.<\/p>\n
"The performing arts featured in Art Summit Indonesia
\nrepresent the highest quality on the world stage. The Japanese
\nand French groups which performed in the last two events were
\nremarkable. Hopefully, this year's groups will not have less
\nquality than the earlier performances," said renowned painter,
\nperforming artist and writer Danarto on Friday.<\/p>\n
He said the foreign artists provided a contrast with their
\nlocal peers.<\/p>\n
"The performing arts presented by the international artists
\ndraw on universal issues, while our performing arts basically
\ndraws on the social and political condition (in Indonesia)," he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Dancer Sardono Waluyo Kusumo said the summit would help the
\nyounger artists tune in the world's contemporary artistic
\ndevelopments.<\/p>\n
"The arts summit is where we can observe the process and
\nexperiences of artists and their new creations. Payung Hitam
\ntheater group from Bandung represents the younger generation,
\nwhich have an opportunity to perform along side its predecessors,
\nlike Farida Oetojo and Boi G. Sakti, who represent the older
\ngeneration.<\/p>\n
"We feature both our generations of artists and not only the
\nold faces," said Sardono, who is also deputy of the event's
\nartistic committee.<\/p>\n
However, he warned that efforts must be made to ensure that
\nquality is maintained when hosting an international event. He
\nsaid that the Graha Bhakti Budaya theater at TIM was no longer
\nsuitable for hosting world-class performances.<\/p>\n
"The infrastructure development is neglected. For example, the
\ngovernment's subsidy to TIM has never increased. If the
\nperformances are improving, they also need a better venue to
\nperform. The government pays little attention to the development
\nof TIM.<\/p>\n
"The Jakarta administration must take the initiative in
\nrenovating TIM if they want to maintain their prestige," he said.<\/p>\n
Female artist Ratna Sarumpaet voiced the same concern.<\/p>\n
"We want to become an arts center, but we don't have a good
\ntheater for the art summit. We only have two theater buildings
\nfor about 200 million Indonesians. This is a neglected priority,"
\nshe said.<\/p>",
