Art mission aims to melt icy ties with Australia<\/p>\n

An Australian cultural mission comprising Wollongong City Gallery
\ndirector Peter O'Neill and its advisor on Indonesian culture Rob
\nGoodfellow is in Indonesia to attempt to repair the two
\ncountries' strained ties.<\/p>\n
The two are completing their week-long stay in Indonesia with
\na five-day visit to Yogyakarta after a two-day stop in Bali.<\/p>\n
\"During our stay in Bali, we met with Bali Governor Dewa
\nBeratha and he was very supportive of the program we proposed,\"
\nGoodfellow said during a visit to Ardiyanto Gallery on Wednesday
\nnight.<\/p>\n
He said they were preparing a joint program to hold a textile
\nexhibition in Bali, Yogyakarta, and the city of Wollongong,
\nAustralia, involving 20 Australian artists whose works were
\ninspired by the Indonesian culture.<\/p>\n
\"Many Australian artists have visited Indonesia. They brought
\ntheir experiences they found here back home. Some of them
\nexpressed it in their art,\" O'Neill said.<\/p>\n
Dewa Beratha, according to Goodfellow, had expressed his
\nwillingness to host such an exhibition in June and July 2002 in
\nline with the annual Bali Art Festival on the island.<\/p>\n
The same exhibition would be held in Yogyakarta in August 2002
\nand in Wollongong City the following month.<\/p>\n
\"The number of works to be exhibited will depend on the space
\navailable,\" said Goodfellow, adding that the visit to Ardiyanto
\nGallery was to scope for an exhibition room that could
\naccommodate as many pieces as possible.<\/p>\n
\"Wollongong Mayor Lord Mayor George Harrison is scheduled to
\nattend the exhibitions as a special guest,\" he said.<\/p>\n
While staying in the city, the pair will meet with both the
\nYogyakarta mayor and Yogyakarta Governor Sultan Hamengkubuwono X
\nto discuss the joint exhibition.<\/p>\n
\"We want to convince everybody that there are still
\npossibilities to melt the two countries's cold ties. We also want
\nto show that there are many Indonesians and Australians who are
\nstill trying to maintain good ties between their peoples,\"
\nGoodfellow said.<\/p>",
