Art explores Peru-RI link<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The ambassador of Peru had a problem. How could
\nhe raise money for charity, make a contribution to Indonesia's
\n50th anniversary and at the same time raise Indonesian's
\nawareness about his country?<\/p>\n
A competition, simple. Everyone loves a competition, or so he
\nthought.<\/p>\n
With the aid of the Women's International Club and the
\nIndonesian National Commission of UNESCO, a painting competition
\nwas born. Theme: An exploration of cultural similarities between
\nIndonesia and Peru.<\/p>\n
Amateur painters from all over Indonesia were invited to
\nsubmit work to the competition with the chance to win prizes in
\nthe league of a round trip ticket to Peru (the Peruvian link) and
\nRp 2 million.<\/p>\n
UNESCO distributed brochures and pamphlets advertising the
\ncompetition throughout Indonesia. They waited.<\/p>\n
A month before the submission deadline, the ambassador was
\nworried. Where were the hoards of paintings he was expecting?<\/p>\n
Then they started. Paintings flooded in from 17 provinces,
\nfilling the office. A total of 266 artworks arrived including
\nframed oil paintings, crayon works from four year olds and
\nmultimedia pieces.<\/p>\n
A jury of nine, including artist Ratmini Sudjatmoko, selected
\neight finalists from which three winners will be chosen at
\nTuesday night's award ceremony and auction at The World Trade
\nCenter.<\/p>\n
The finalists were chosen based on the extent to which they
\nexplored the Peruvian theme.<\/p>\n
All entries will be for auction and the money raised will go
\ntoward helping needy children in Indonesia, coordinated by the
\nWomen's International Club in consultation with the ambassador of
\nPeru.<\/p>\n
The paintings will be exhibited in the lobby of the World
\nTrade Center from Dec. 11 to Dec. 15 and entry is free of charge.
