        "content": "<p>Army promises tight security for SEA Games<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): City Military Maj. Gen. Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, who<br>\nis also security chairman for the SEA Games, yesterday ordered a<br>\nspecial 10,000-strong team to ensure tight security during the<br>\nevent.<\/p>\n<p>Security at the 19th SEA Games should be tight, said Sjafrie<br>\nat a ceremony attended by all of the teams personnel, including<br>\nmilitary and police officers and related agencies such as the<br>\nCity Fire Agency, Immigration and the Customs Office.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The nation&apos;s honor is at stake,&quot; said Sjafrie.<\/p>\n<p>He said all team members should carry out their respective<br>\ntasks in a professional and strategic way.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I order you to avoid even the smallest problem in handling<br>\nany troubles which may possibly occur during the event,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Sjafrie said the special team would be responsible for<br>\nprotecting the 5,800 athletes and officials from the 10 Southeast<br>\nAsian countries.<\/p>\n<p>Security would be particularly tight at the Soekarno-Hatta<br>\nInternational Airport, sport venues, hotels and the environs, he<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Participating athletes and officials will be protected from<br>\nthe moment they arrive in Jakarta and during their stay until<br>\nthey leave Jakarta,&quot; Sjafrie said.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday&apos;s ceremony at the Senayan parking lot in Central<br>\nJakarta also displayed the wide range of security tools to be<br>\nused by the team.<\/p>\n<p>These include 10 helicopters, six armored vehicles, seven riot<br>\npolice vans, six tourist service cars and dozens of motorcycles.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;It doesn&apos;t mean we want to show off our force, it&apos;s purely to<br>\nshow that we&apos;re ready to protect the games, participants and<br>\nofficers and make the event a success,&quot; Sjafrie said.<\/p>\n<p>The security task has been code-named Hanoman, the name of a<br>\nsmart white monkey in a popular local epic which is also used by<br>\nhost Indonesia as the symbol of the 19th SEA Games.<\/p>\n<p>Sjafrie said the team has undergone training here to meet the<br>\nsecurity requirements of the SEA Games.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We have to carefully monitor the athletes, games activities,<br>\nvenues, facilities and installations required for the events,&quot; he<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>During yesterday&apos;s ceremony, Sjafrie was accompanied by City<br>\nPolice Chief Maj. Gen. Hamami Nata, who is deputy chairman of the<br>\nsecurity team, and Deputy Governor for administrative affairs,<br>\nAbdul Kahfi.<\/p>\n<p>After delivering his speech, Sjafrie and the two officials<br>\ninspected the special team, assessing the readiness of the<br>\nsecurity officers and their equipment.<\/p>\n<p>The team consists of 7,500 in-the-field members and 2,500<br>\nstandbys at their respective home bases.<\/p>\n<p>The games are scheduled to be officially opened by President<br>\nSoeharto on Oct. 11 and officially closed by Vice President Try<br>\nSutrisno on Oct. 19.<\/p>\n<p>Hamami said Thursday that athletes and their officials were<br>\nnot forbidden from any part of the city.
