Army promises tight security for SEA Games<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): City Military Maj. Gen. Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, who
\nis also security chairman for the SEA Games, yesterday ordered a
\nspecial 10,000-strong team to ensure tight security during the
\nevent.<\/p>\n
Security at the 19th SEA Games should be tight, said Sjafrie
\nat a ceremony attended by all of the teams personnel, including
\nmilitary and police officers and related agencies such as the
\nCity Fire Agency, Immigration and the Customs Office.<\/p>\n
"The nation's honor is at stake," said Sjafrie.<\/p>\n
He said all team members should carry out their respective
\ntasks in a professional and strategic way.<\/p>\n
"I order you to avoid even the smallest problem in handling
\nany troubles which may possibly occur during the event," he said.<\/p>\n
Sjafrie said the special team would be responsible for
\nprotecting the 5,800 athletes and officials from the 10 Southeast
\nAsian countries.<\/p>\n
Security would be particularly tight at the Soekarno-Hatta
\nInternational Airport, sport venues, hotels and the environs, he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
"Participating athletes and officials will be protected from
\nthe moment they arrive in Jakarta and during their stay until
\nthey leave Jakarta," Sjafrie said.<\/p>\n
Yesterday's ceremony at the Senayan parking lot in Central
\nJakarta also displayed the wide range of security tools to be
\nused by the team.<\/p>\n
These include 10 helicopters, six armored vehicles, seven riot
\npolice vans, six tourist service cars and dozens of motorcycles.<\/p>\n
"It doesn't mean we want to show off our force, it's purely to
\nshow that we're ready to protect the games, participants and
\nofficers and make the event a success," Sjafrie said.<\/p>\n
The security task has been code-named Hanoman, the name of a
\nsmart white monkey in a popular local epic which is also used by
\nhost Indonesia as the symbol of the 19th SEA Games.<\/p>\n
Sjafrie said the team has undergone training here to meet the
\nsecurity requirements of the SEA Games.<\/p>\n
"We have to carefully monitor the athletes, games activities,
\nvenues, facilities and installations required for the events," he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
During yesterday's ceremony, Sjafrie was accompanied by City
\nPolice Chief Maj. Gen. Hamami Nata, who is deputy chairman of the
\nsecurity team, and Deputy Governor for administrative affairs,
\nAbdul Kahfi.<\/p>\n
After delivering his speech, Sjafrie and the two officials
\ninspected the special team, assessing the readiness of the
\nsecurity officers and their equipment.<\/p>\n
The team consists of 7,500 in-the-field members and 2,500
\nstandbys at their respective home bases.<\/p>\n
The games are scheduled to be officially opened by President
\nSoeharto on Oct. 11 and officially closed by Vice President Try
\nSutrisno on Oct. 19.<\/p>\n
Hamami said Thursday that athletes and their officials were
\nnot forbidden from any part of the city. (04)<\/p>",
