        "content": "<p>Army of secret informers needed<\/p>\n<p>The Sept. 9 bomb explosion in front of the Australian Embassy<br>\nin Jakarta, could have been prevented if the police and the<br>\nintelligence services, had an army of secret informers, who are<br>\nwell-paid and full-time, not doing the job as a pastime or<br>\namateurs.<\/p>\n<p>Their search for suspect characters by mingling with all<br>\nlevels of the population should be a 24-hour and well-coordinated<br>\nduty. The perpetrators knew too well that most security officers<br>\nwere or still are preoccupied with the second round of the direct<br>\npresidential election and that seemed to be the right time to<br>\nstrike whatever their motives.<\/p>\n<p>Future threats from terrorists, using the same device, have<br>\nnow become a very serious problem, which can spill over to<br>\nextreme groupings dissatisfied with the results of the election,<br>\nas seen at the central General Elections Commission (KPU) tally<br>\nas well as at the several polling booths.<\/p>\n<p>If there are no arrests of the suspected group before the<br>\nSept. 20 presidential election, personally I have a hunch that<br>\nviolence and bombing explosions may accompany the democratic<br>\nexercise. The impression is that police and secret agencies have<br>\nbeen taking their duties in this respect with too much<br>\ncomplacency with no apparent urgency.<\/p>\n<p>In light of the presidential election, it might have been a<br>\ntest by extreme elements of how the security authorities would<br>\nreact to such a challenge. There is too much at stake, nationally<br>\nand globally, to refrain from greatly strengthening this army of<br>\nsecret informers. And it should be immediately considered,<br>\nwhatever the result of the election. Common people, like myself,<br>\nsadly fail to understand why Indonesians have become a people<br>\nthat so easily resort to violence. There is fear that the<br>\npresidential elections will turn out to be an unruly and violent<br>\naffair after the latest bombing incident.<\/p>\n<p>GANDHI SUKARDI<br>\nJakarta<\/p>",
