        "content": "<p>Army cracks down on rebels<\/p>\n<p>MANOKWARI, Irian Jaya: The Armed Forces (ABRI) is still<br>\ntracking down the rebels that killed two of the 11 people being<br>\nheld hostage in the jungle last month.<\/p>\n<p>Manokwari military commander Col. Frans Willem de Wanna said<br>\non Saturday that the military operation is focusing on the<br>\nfollowers of Kelly Kwalik and Daniel Kogoya.<\/p>\n<p>Kwalik and Kogoya's men held 11 hostages from Jan. 8 through<br>\nMay 15 in the jungle-clad Mapnduma village. Two hostages were<br>\nkilled by the kidnappers when ABRI launched a rescue operation.<\/p>\n<p>Frans said that the current military operation is being<br>\ncoordinated by Maj. Gen. Dunidja, chief of the Trikora regional<br>\nmilitary command which oversees security in Maluku and Irian<br>\nJaya, Antara reported.<\/p>\n<p>He said ABRI has posted 611 soldiers in the Timika and<br>\nTembagapura subdistricts, where the plants of PT Freeport<br>\nIndonesia, a giant American gold and copper company, are located.<\/p>\n<p>Local indigenous people occasionally have vandalized the<br>\ncompany's facilities to demonstrate their dissatisfaction with<br>\nthe \"share\" given to them.<\/p>\n<p>Frans said the rebels are no serious threat to PT Freeport's<br>\noperations because their number is declining.<\/p>\n<p>ABRI members in the area have been the target of human rights<br>\nabuse allegations.
