Arms case defendant blames hotel staff<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Haryogi M. Maulani, a defendant in a case
\ninvolving alleged illegal firearms possession, testified before
\nthe West Jakarta District Court on Monday that a staff of a West
\nJakarta hotel sneaked into his room while he was asleep on the
\nevening of Feb. 15.<\/p>\n
While he had yet to confirm the ownership of an AK-47 rifle
\nand a handgun, Haryogi apparently tried to blame it on the staff.<\/p>\n
"I fell asleep on the sofa and neither heard nor saw anyone
\nentering my room. They were not invited," he told a hearing,
\npresided over by judge Sri Handojo.<\/p>\n
Haryogi, a son of former State Intelligence Coordinating Body
\n(Bakin) chief Lt. Gen. (ret) Zaini Azhar Maulani, also rejected
\ntestimony from witness Dadang Setyohadi -- hotel staff -- that he
\nhad a gun magazine in the room.<\/p>\n
Earlier, Dadang testified that he received orders from staff
\nto tidy up the room.<\/p>\n
"The guest at the room had reportedly intended to check out.
\nSo I went to the room," said Dadang, a housekeeping supervisor at
\nthe hotel.<\/p>\n
Dadang denied that he entered the room without Haryogi's
\npermission.<\/p>\n
He said that he saw an unloaded AK-47 rifle on the floor.<\/p>\n
"I picked it up and placed it on top of the fridge. At that
\ntime, I saw pak Haryogi taking a magazine from the rifle out of a
\nbig bag," he said.<\/p>\n
As he completed his task, Dadang said he rushed to report his
\nfindings to Roy Kurniawan, a deputy security chief at the hotel
\naround 11:45 p.m.<\/p>\n
Haryogi rejected Dadang's statement that he opened the door
\nfor Dadang and took the magazine of the rifle out of his bag.<\/p>\n
"I was asleep at that time, therefore I never saw the witness
\nand never opened the room's door for him," he said.<\/p>\n
"I also never brought the magazine to the hotel."<\/p>\n
Another witness, Roy Kurniawan, said he reported the incident
\nat Tamansari Police Precinct after receiving the information from
\nDadang.<\/p>\n
"Three people, led by First. Lt. Samuel Tobing came to the
\nhotel around 12.30 a.m. on Feb. 16, and began to search the
\ndefendant," he said.<\/p>\n
Roy said the defendant had left his room as the police and the
\nhotel's security staff began searching it.<\/p>\n
"Several minutes later, we arrested him in the hotel lobby,
\nfinding a loaded 7.65-caliber Colt Walther handgun which was
\nstrapped to the defendant's left leg," he said.<\/p>\n
Roy said the AK-47 rifle was finally found at the hotel's park
\nafter receiving information from a parking attendant.<\/p>\n
In the previous hearing, three witnesses, including two police
\nofficers, gave testimonies which implicated the defendant.<\/p>\n
"The defendant admitted that he was the owner of the firearms
\nduring the police raid in a hotel in West Jakarta last February,"
\nsaid First. Lt. Samuel Tobing, chief of police detectives at the
\nTaman Sari police subprecinct in West Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Samuel said the 37-year-old defendant once tried to convince
\nthe police officers that he possessed the firearms legally.<\/p>\n
"The defendant said he was a Bakin member, showing us the copy
\nof a license stipulating that he possessed the firearms legally,"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
Samuel said the police then urged him to show them his
\nofficial identity with the corps.<\/p>\n
"He later admitted that he was not a member," he said.<\/p>\n
Judge Sri Handojo adjourned the hearing until next week to
\nhear testimonies from other witnesses.<\/p>\n
Last Monday, witnesses testified that Haryogi was the owner of
\nthe firearms.<\/p>\n
Three witnesses, including two police officers, told a hearing
\nat the same court in support of the prosecutor's accusation that
\nHaryogi owned the loaded Colt Walther handgun and the AK-47
\nrifle.<\/p>\n
"The defendant admitted during a police raid in a hotel in
\nWest Jakarta last February that the firearms were his," chief of
\ndetectives of West Jakarta's Taman Sari Police First Lt. Samuel
