Armed robbers seize Rp 30.4 million<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Two armed men robbed Ministry of Information
\nemployees of Rp 30.4 million (US$13,130) at the ministry's
\ncompound on Jl. Merdeka Barat, Central Jakarta, yesterday.<\/p>\n
Dozens of employees rushed to help their colleagues but could
\ndo nothing because one of the robbers fired a gun into the air.<\/p>\n
No one was injured.<\/p>\n
The employees, Ajisman and Amrullah, said they were about to
\nleave their Kijang van when an athletic-looking man put a sickle
\naround Ajisman's neck and stole the bag containing the money.<\/p>\n
They withdrew the money from a bank on Jl. Thamrin. The money
\nbelonged to the ministry.<\/p>\n
Ajisman, 38, tried to resist and screamed for help but
\nAmrullah, also 38, was too stunned to do anything.<\/p>\n
While one criminal stole the money, the other fired shots
\nto frighten those who came to help the victims. The robbers
\nescaped on a Yamaha RX-King motorcycle.<\/p>\n
Witnesses said they sped through a red traffic light and
\nheaded toward Harmoni.<\/p>\n
Witnesses said the suspect with the gun wore a red jacket and
\ndark trousers while the other wore a long-sleeved shirt.<\/p>\n
Central Jakarta Police Precinct officers arrived a few hours
\nlater to collect information from the victims and witnesses.<\/p>\n
\"A cartridge found at the scene of crime will be brought to
\nthe ballistic laboratory for examination,\" said Central Jakarta
\nPolice Chief Lt. Col. M. Ibrahim.<\/p>\n
Armed robberies of bank customers are on the rise on Jl. Medan
\nMerdeka which houses the Presidential Palace and several
\ngovernment offices.<\/p>\n
At least four cases have been reported, none have been solved
\nand no suspects arrested.<\/p>\n
The latest robbery took place last Thursday on Jl. Medan
\nMerdeka Selatan near the United States embassy.<\/p>\n
The robbery occurred in front of dozens of people. Four men
\ncarrying guns and machetes robbed Rp 30 million from a travel
\ncompany's director. They killed the director and wounded his aid.<\/p>\n
A police source said yesterday's robbery might have been
\ncommitted by the same people because the crimes were similar.<\/p>\n
Many people might be involved, he said.<\/p>\n
On Wednesday four unidentified men attacked a private employee
\nwho had just withdrawn Rp 26 million. The robbery attempt
\nhappened on Jl. Let. Jen. Suprapto, Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The victim, Sahlan, had just left the Cempaka Putih Bank
\nCentral Asia branch by motorbike when four men on two motorbikes
\nintercepted him and snatched his bag which contained money.<\/p>\n
The robbers stabbed Sahlan and his scream for help alerted
\npeople nearby. The robbers escaped without the money, and Sahlan
\nis in hospital with a serious arm injury.<\/p>\n
The police source said city detectives had begun identifying
\nthe operation's characteristics and were close to finding the
\nsuspects' hiding place.<\/p>\n
In a recent operation, police arrested 40 people from two
\nsyndicates believed to have been involved in a series of similar
\nrobberies in and around the city over the past few years. (bsr)<\/p>",
