Armed rebels launch two more attacks<\/p>\n
BANDA ACEH, Aceh (JP): Police on Wednesday said that armed
\nrebels had launched yet more hit-and-run attacks, this time on an
\narms storage depot and a district religious affairs office.<\/p>\n
No casualties were reported in either of the Tuesday night
\nincidents.<\/p>\n
The first attack occurred when rebels launched a mortar attack
\non an arms depot in Pulo Rungkom village, Lhokseumawe.<\/p>\n
North Aceh Police Precinct chief Supt. Abadan Bangko on
\nWednesday estimated that five mortar projectiles were fired at
\nthe depot, \"however no fatalities or major damage was reported as
\nthe rebels missed the target\".<\/p>\n
Free Aceh Movement (GAM) spokesman Abu Sofyan Daud confirmed
\nthe attack saying it was launched in retaliation for Indonesia
\nsecurity forces' alleged violations of the Humanitarian Pause.<\/p>\n
The second attack occurred when a bomb exploded at the
\nreligious affairs office in Suka Makmur district, in Aceh Besar,
\nshattering windows and damaging some rooms in the building.<\/p>\n
Religious affairs offices across the province have been the
\nfrequent targets of such attacks.<\/p>\n
The deputy commander of the Cinta Meunasah police operation,
\nSupt. Yatim Suyatmo, said that after the explosion another bomb
\nwent off near the Lambaro bridge, Inginjaya district, in Aceh
\nBesar.<\/p>\n
However, the blast failed to damage the bridge,\" Yatim was
\nquoted by Antara as saying.<\/p>\n
He added that the bridge, linking Banda Aceh and the Blang
\nBintang area, escaped damage as the bomb was not powerful enough.<\/p>\n
While violence continued on the ground, negotiators of the
\nHumanitarian Pause continued to work on the administrative
\naspects of the accord.<\/p>\n
The Banda Aceh-based Joint Committee on Security Modalities
\nrevealed on Wednesday that a six-member monitoring team would be
\nset up in each of the four most clash-prone regencies -- Pidie,
\nNorth Aceh, East Aceh and South Aceh.<\/p>\n
The teams would be tasked with providing immediate reports on
\npossible clashes occurring between the security forces and GAM.<\/p>\n
The teams are expected to comprise religious and community
\nleaders and non-governmental organizations.(50\/lup)<\/p>",
