Armed men attack Matori<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): South Jakarta Police detectives are searching
\nfor one of the two suspects in the Sunday morning attack on
\nNational Awakening Party (PKB) chairman Matori Abdul Djalil at
\nhis residence in the Tanjung Mas Raya housing complex.<\/p>\n
South Jakarta Police chief of detectives Maj. Rycko Amelza
\nDaniel said on Sunday they had found a lead in the attack and
\nwere tracking down the suspect.<\/p>\n
"We more or less have the key to solving this case ... we are
\ncombing the streets. Just wait," Rycko told reporters.<\/p>\n
The suspects used a black Yamaha RX-King motorcycle, license
\nnumber B 5013 PZ.<\/p>\n
A city police source said the owner of the motorcycle's
\ndocuments was a man identified as Arjun.<\/p>\n
"I cannot say who committed the crime. What I can tell you is
\nthat the name on the STNK (motorcycle documents) is Arjun," the
\nsource told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
South Jakarta Police chief Col. Nono Suprijono said on Sunday
\nmorning Matori was hit by a machete on the back of his head and
\non his right arm (when he tried to resist).<\/p>\n
"We're trying to locate that machete. We've confiscated an FN-
\n46 gun, two bullets and the clothes of the dead suspect, who wore
\ndark blue training pants, a cream shirt and Keds shoes, as
\nevidence. The gun was never used in the shooting," Nono told
\nreporters at the crime scene.<\/p>\n
National Police chief Lt. Gen. Rusdihardjo said he suspected
\nthe case was politically motivated.<\/p>\n
"It's not a simple crime. It might have political motives.
\nWe're still investigating the case," Rusdihardjo told reporters
\nat Pasar Rebo Hospital in East Jakarta where Matori was treated.<\/p>\n
"I suspect the attack was premeditated as Pak Matori had
\nreceived at least two phone threats."<\/p>\n
Rusdihardjo said the attackers stayed overnight near Matori's
\nhouse before entering the house in the morning.<\/p>\n
One of the suspects, who allegedly struck the victim with the
\nmachete and tried to escape, was mobbed to death by ojek
\n(motorcycle taxi) drivers and passersby in front of the Jagakarsa
\nEconomic College on Jl. TB Simatupang.<\/p>\n
Another suspect, who ran toward Jagakarsa, got away scot-free.
\nNono added that both suspects remained unidentified.<\/p>\n
Police confiscated a black bag that fell from the hands of the
\nmain suspect, who dropped it in a hurry when he was trying to
\nescape following the attack.<\/p>\n
It contained a small version of the Koran, brochures on air-
\nconditioners and furniture, a green T-shirt and a beeper.<\/p>\n
Five construction workers were working on a section of
\nMatori's house -- the guest and living room areas -- when the
\nincident happened at the victim's home on Jl. Elang Mas II, Block
\nC No. 12, of the Tanjung Mas Raya housing complex.<\/p>\n
The workers were identified as Agus, Nur, Joko, Makmur and
\nHerman.<\/p>\n
Agus said that one man, wearing a white T-shirt, dark blue
\ntraining pants and Keds running shoes, entered the house at about
\n8:30 a.m. from a back door of the living room area, which was
\nbeing renovated.<\/p>\n
"He started offering Pak Matori, who was still in his sarong
\nand a shirt, some interior design brochures. Suddenly we heard
\nhim screaming and saw the blood on his head. We ran after the
\nman," Agus said.<\/p>\n
When the suspect ran out through the living room's back door,
\nhe immediately got on the RX-King motorcycle, where his friend
\nwas standing by.<\/p>\n
Tatang, a security officer of the housing complex, said the
\ntwo on the RX-King were speeding toward the Gg. Bacang alley,
\nvery near the Al-Hikmah Mosque.<\/p>\n
"Due to its speed, the motorcycle swerved and fell over at Gg.
\nBacang. The main suspect was still holding the machete. When
\nhundreds of residents surrounded them, one of the suspects took
\nout a gun and shot twice into the air," Tatang said.<\/p>\n
"The crowds dispersed. The two ran, held up a passing ojek and
\ngot on the vehicle, which was driven by the terrified driver,
\nNardi."<\/p>\n
Rycko added that upon reaching Jl. Rancho Indah, the two
\nsuspects got off the ojek and onto the S15 angkot public van,
\nwhich serves the Pasar Rebo-Pasar Minggu route.<\/p>\n
"Nardi, who was very mad, screamed for help when the two
\nsuspects got on the angkot. Nearby ojek drivers chased the angkot
\nuntil they reached the turning under the TB Simatupang toll road.
\nThe angkot had to stop at traffic lights," Rycko said.<\/p>\n
"Both suspects got of the van. One suspect ran toward
\nJagakarsa and was gone. Another, who passed under the TB
\nSimatupang toll road and was trying to head for Pasar Minggu, was
\nmobbed to death."<\/p>\n
The hospital's director, Umar Wahid, said Matori was in good
\ncondition.<\/p>\n
"He's okay after suffering injuries from a sharp weapon,"
\nUmar, who is also a younger brother of President Abdurrahman
\nWahid, said.<\/p>\n
Among the figures visiting Matori at the hospital were
\nPresident Abdurrahman, Vice President Megawati Soekarnoputri and
\nher husband Taufik Kiemas and Minister of Foreign Affairs Alwi
\nShihab.<\/p>\n
President Abdurrahman urged the police to find the mastermind
\nbehind the attack.<\/p>\n
"We'd better not make any prejudicial statements. It might
\nhave a political or even private motive," Abdurrahman said.<\/p>\n
He agreed to proposals that police should increase their
\nprotection of high-ranking officials, including the People's
\nConsultative Assembly (MPR) speaker and deputy speaker.<\/p>\n
PKB legislator A. Effendy Choirie did not deny that the case
\nmight have had a political motive.<\/p>\n
"PKB will set up a fact finding team to help the police solve
