Armed men attacked two buses on a main road in northern Niger on\nTuesday, killing 11 passengers, local media and sources said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe attack on two buses killed at least 11 people and left several\nothers injured,\u201d local television station Tegades TV reported, according\nto AFP on Wednesday (21 October 2026).<\/p>\n
The buses had left the mining town of Arlit on Tuesday morning. They\nwere attacked outside the city of Agadez by gunmen travelling in three\nvehicles.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe were on our way to Agadez when we came across bandits who opened\nfire on us,\u201d one passenger told Tegades TV, showing a wound to his\nshoulder.<\/p>\n
\u201cMany people died,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He said soldiers escorting the bus convoy exchanged gunfire with the\nattackers.<\/p>\n
An Agadez resident confirmed the attack to AFP.<\/p>\n
The vast, arid north of the West African country has largely been\nspared the jihadist violence affecting its western and south-eastern\nregions. However, it is a trafficking route for drugs, firearms and\nmigrants, particularly those heading to Europe.<\/p>\n
The region is also home to armed groups opposed to the military junta\nthat has governed the country since the 2023 coup that ousted President\nMohamed Bazoum.
