Armed Forces gets four more full generals<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Four officers of the Armed Forces were promoted
\nin rank yesterday to become full four-star generals, Antara
\nreported.<\/p>\n
Wiranto, chief of the Army's Strategic Reserves Command
\n(Kostrad), was promoted on the eve of his appointment as Army
\nchief of staff to replace Gen. Hartono.<\/p>\n
Hartono retired from active duty when he turned 56 yesterday.
\nHis service had already been extended for one year by President
\nSoeharto. The mandatory retirement age for a military officer is
\n55.<\/p>\n
The other three officers who now wear four stars on their
\nshoulders are Admiral Arief Kushariadi, the Navy chief of staff,
\nMarshall Sutria Tubagus, the Air Force chief of staff, and
\nGeneral Dibyo Widodo, the chief of National Police.<\/p>\n
The positions of chief of staff and chief of National Police
\nhave usually been held by four-star generals. Arief, Sutria and
\nDibyo have held their posts since March last year but were only
\npromoted in rank yesterday.<\/p>\n
Wiranto is scheduled to be installed in his new post in a
\nceremony today which will also see Hartono appointed as
\ninformation minister, and Harmoko, whom Hartono will replace, as
\nstate minister of special assignments.<\/p>\n
The ceremony will be led by President Soeharto.<\/p>\n
Five other officers, who were on the latest major tours of
\nduty in the Army, were also promoted in rank yesterday, according
\nto Antara. They were:<\/p>\n
* Subagyo H.S., chief of the Diponegoro Military Command in
\nCentral Java, became a lieutenant general. He was promoted
\nyesterday to become deputy Army chief of staff to replace Lt.
\nGen. F.X. Sudjasmin, who retired last week.<\/p>\n
* Sugiono, the chief of the Presidential Security Guard
\nCommand, who will become the new Kostrad chief, was promoted to
\nbecome a lieutenant general.<\/p>\n
* Mardiyanto, deputy governor of the Military Academy and soon
\nto be Diponegoro Military Command chief, became a major general.<\/p>\n
* Sutarto, deputy to the Army chief of staff's assistant for
\noperations, was promoted to chief of the Presidential Security
\nGuard Command as a major general.<\/p>\n
* Frans de Wanna, formerly Manokwari military chief in Irian
\nJaya, was promoted to become head of the Center for Biak
\nIntegrated Economic Development in Irian Jaya. His new rank is
\nbrigadier general.<\/p>\n
The newly promoted officers reported for duty yesterday to
