        "content": "<p>Armed Forces enter cyberspace world<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The Armed Forces and the defense ministry have<br>\nentered the cyberspace age, hooking up to the Internet.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the two institutions are planning to jointly develop<br>\ntheir own data base system, to be called Hankamnet, Commodore Sri<br>\nDiharto, the defense ministry&apos;s chief of database information,<br>\nsaid yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a seminar on defense and security information<br>\nnetworks, Diharto said the ministry and the Armed Forces are<br>\nalready using the Internet to obtain information about<br>\ndevelopments overseas. &quot;We can learn a lot of things about<br>\nscience and technology, defense and security matters through the<br>\ninternet global network,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Indonesian military is also supplying information to the<br>\nnetwork about defense and the military, although the data<br>\nprovided is of a strictly &quot;thematic&quot; nature, he said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the military also uses the Internet to counter<br>\n&quot;negative information&quot; about Indonesia that circulates on the<br>\ncomputer network.<\/p>\n<p>Diharto said the Internet has been used by &quot;anti-Indonesia&quot;<br>\ngroups to discredit the government and the military.<\/p>\n<p>As an example of false information that has found its way onto<br>\nthe internet, he said the recent &quot;home-page&quot; of the U.S. Central<br>\nIntelligence Agency described Harmoko, the chairman of<br>\nIndonesia&apos;s ruling political organization, as a retired Army<br>\nlieutenant general.<\/p>\n<p>More recent examples of &quot;negative information&quot; include<br>\ncriticisms of the Indonesian military&apos;s presence in East Timor,<br>\nAceh and Irian Jaya, he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said Indonesia has no choice but to enter the cyberspace<br>\nage. &quot;Whether we like it or not, we have to adapt to the drastic<br>\nadvances in information and communications technology. We will be<br>\nleft behind otherwise,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the Armed Forces and the defense ministry&apos;s planned<br>\nHankamnet database would provide accurate thematic information on<br>\nthe military to the public.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Through the (Hankamnet) network, interconnecting all<br>\ninformation centers in the ministry and ABRI (Armed Forces),<br>\neveryone will have access to information on defense and<br>\nsecurity,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The defense ministry&apos;s Director General for Planning and<br>\nBudgetary Affairs Rear Admiral Jusuf Effendi said an integrated<br>\ninformation system is vital to strengthen the management of the<br>\nArmed Forces.<\/p>\n<p>Despite budgetary limitations, the Armed Forces will have to<br>\nset up a modern data base system for include military and<br>\nintelligence information, he said.
