        "content": "<p>Armed Forces 'big family' told to preserve unity<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The chief patron of the Armed Forces \"Big<br>\nFamily\" (KBA), Gen. Wiranto, called on the military and its<br>\nrelated organizations to preserve unity on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to reporters after addressing the opening ceremony of<br>\na two-day KBA meeting, he said a close relationship between<br>\nmilitary organizations should be maintained in this era of<br>\nreform.<\/p>\n<p>\"The Armed Forces (ABRI) and KBA have such a historically<br>\nclose relationship. It must be maintained now that the nation is<br>\nundergoing a serious and prolonged economic crisis,\" said<br>\nWiranto, who is also the minister of defense and security\/Armed<br>\nForces (ABRI) commander.<\/p>\n<p>KBA is made up of four military related organizations which<br>\nare also linked to the dominant Golkar party. Other Golkar allies<br>\ninclude the Civil Service Corps (Korpri) and several mass<br>\norganizations.<\/p>\n<p>ABRI, together with six other mass organizations, merged and<br>\nformed Golkar in 1964 in an effort to overcome the increasing<br>\ninfluence of the now-outlawed Indonesian Communist Party (PKI).<\/p>\n<p>Threats of division among junior and senior KBA members<br>\nemerged last July, immediately after Minister\/State Secretary<br>\nAkbar Tandjung won Golkar's chairmanship race on July 11,<br>\ndefeating former minister of defense Gen. (ret.) Edi Sudradjat.<\/p>\n<p>Akbar's victory was strongly protested by Edi's supporters,<br>\nmostly members of the Armed Forces Veterans Association (PEPABRI)<br>\nand the Communication Forum of Indonesian Veterans' Children<br>\n(FKPPI), who accused the government and ABRI officials of<br>\nintervening in the election process in Akbar's favor.<\/p>\n<p>Some members of PEPABRI and FKPPI then helped to form Barisan<br>\nNasional (National Front), a group of opposition figures.<\/p>\n<p>Wiranto said the family members' common commitment to unity<br>\nshould be upheld and renewed.<\/p>\n<p>\"Otherwise, the KBA will be vulnerable to disintegration,\" he<br>\nsaid.
