Armed bandit, killer arrested in Klender<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Police in Duren Sawit, East Jakarta, have
\narrested a man wanted in connection with a series of robberies
\nand the fatal shooting, on Friday, of two gas station employees.<\/p>\n
\"The apprehension of the suspect, along with his revolver,
\ncoming less than 30 hours after the last failed robbery attempt,
\nhas helped us to solve at least six cases that he allegedly
\ncommitted,\" City Police Chief Maj. Gen. Dibyo Widodo told
\nreporters in the early hours of yesterday morning.<\/p>\n
The suspect, identified as Teguh Abdulah Hanafi, 24, was shot
\nby police in his left leg as he tried to escape from police
\ncustody, said Dibyo, who was accompanied by East Jakarta police
\nchief Lt. Col. Miyanto.<\/p>\n
\"Articles seized include a revolver and four shells of bullets
\nfound at the scene of the crime,\" Dibyo said, adding that police
\nare still investigating the origin of the gun and the bullets.<\/p>\n
According to Miyanto, Teguh was arrested at his house on Jl.
\nBulak Raya in Klender, East Jakarta, at about 10 p.m. on Saturday
\nwhile having a small party with his friends after the sale of
\nthree pocket cameras he had stolen earlier from a shop.<\/p>\n
\"The main motive for his actions was just money, which he then
\nlavished on his friends,\" said Duren Sawit police chief, Maj.
\nBachtiar Tambunan.<\/p>\n
Teguh, a bachelor whose education does not extend beyond high
\nschool, is believed to have attempted a robbery at a gas station
\non Jl. Ngurah Rai on Friday. In the course of the failed attempt,
\ntwo employees of the gas station were fatally shot.<\/p>\n
\"I don't know whether the victims died because I just fired
\nthe gun at random,\" the suspect told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
Police have also accused him of committing at least five other
\nrobberies and hold-ups in East Jakarta in the three consecutive
\ndays preceding Friday. They say he made off with Rp 313,250
\n(US$141) in cash, one bike worth about Rp 3 million and three
\npocket cameras.<\/p>\n
It is alleged that Teguh began his thieving spree on Tuesday
\nlast week by pretending he wanted to get a picture made at the
\nFoto Matic Studio shop. He left the scene with Rp 45,000 cash and
\nthe three cameras after firing one bullet at the ceiling, police
\nclaim.<\/p>\n
On the next day he allegedly robbed the Anita Farma
\npharmaceutical drug store, on Jl. Revolusi, by pretending to be a
\nshopper. Later the same day he is said to have robbed an ojek
\n(motorcycle taxi) driver on Jl. R. Inten, by pretending to be a
\npassenger and then frightening the driver by firing a shot near
\nhis ear. Police say he also robbed a shop on Jl. Malaka.<\/p>\n
\"The last attempt failed after he saw a person who looked like
\nan officer,\" Dibyo said.<\/p>\n
Teguh, who is said to have been involved in crime previously,
\nhas admitted that he committed another hold-up on Thursday in the
\nDuren Sawit Indah area and took Rp 80,000 from the victim, police
\nsay.<\/p>\n
Police allege that on the afternoon of the next day, after
\nbuying petrol at the gas station, he went to the lubricant kiosk
\nto steal money and fatally shot two employees in the head.<\/p>\n
\"Based on preliminary investigations, we believe that he
\ncommitted all of these crimes alone,\" said Bachtiar. \"But we're
\nstill exploring the possibility that others were involved,\" he
