Arief Budiman to resign from Satya Wacana<\/p>\n
SEMARANG, Central Java (JP): Outspoken academic Arief Budiman
\nis determined to quit the Satya Wacana Christian University even
\nif he wins his legal battle against the college management over
\nhis dismissal.<\/p>\n
"I will quit Satya Wacana because the present situation is no
\nlonger conducive to promoting democracy and conduct academic
\nactivities," Arief said yesterday.<\/p>\n
He told The Jakarta Post, after attending the hearing of his
\nlawsuit at the Semarang State Administrative Court, that the
\nsituation was so bad he had to quit even though he loves teaching
\nat the university.<\/p>\n
He denied allegations that his decision to leave Satya Wacana
\nwas because of the possibility that he would lose the case.<\/p>\n
"I filed the lawsuit not to seek victory but, rather, to
\nreveal that the foundation's decision to expel me from the
\nuniversity was wrong," he said.<\/p>\n
"There will be no problem if the court's decision is not what
\nI expect," he added.<\/p>\n
The conflict between Arief and the university started with the
\nappointment of John JOI Ihalauw as the new rector in May last
\nyear. Arief and several senior lecturers claimed that the
\nelection process was undemocratic and manipulated by the
\nfoundation in Ihalauw's favor.<\/p>\n
Arief, an ardent critic of the university's rector, was
\ndishonorably dismissed in October last year, after a prolonged
\nconflict with the university's foundation.<\/p>\n
Arief said that he was considering an offer to teach at Perth
\nUniversity and Canberra University if he does quit Satya Wacana.
