ARF delegates call for closer military relations<\/p>\n
CHINA: Delegates to a meeting of Asia's biggest security grouping
\ncalled on Friday for closer military cooperation amid concerns
\nover terrorism and North Korea's nuclear program.<\/p>\n
The gathering of military officials from 24 governments in the
\nASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) is meant to \"open new channels of
\ndialog and exchange among defense officials\", said its chairman,
\nIndonesian Deputy Defense Minister Sudrajat.<\/p>\n
The three-day meeting in Beijing brings together the 10-member
\nAssociation of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and countries with
\ninterests in the region, including the United States, China,
\nJapan, India, Russia, the two Koreas, the European Union,
\nAustralia and New Zealand.<\/p>\n
Delegates plan to take up \"the role of the armed forces in
\ncoming days in combating regional threats\", said Chinese envoy
\nGen. Xiong Guangkai, deputy chief of staff of the People's
\nLiberation Army.<\/p>\n
\"It is our common mission to maintain regional peace and
\nstability, to strengthen trust among militaries and promote
\ncooperation among countries and capabilities to properly meet the
