There could be no Muslim fundamentalists in this country. I,
\nfor one, do not believe in the existence of Islamic
\nfundamentalists here. If such a group was in existence, I believe
\nmany figures who have done a lot in the interest of Islam would
\nnot be alive now. People like Maraden Panggabean, Sudomo, Benny
\nMoerdani, Sintong Panjaitan and many others would have had a
\ndifficult time.<\/p>\n
In reality, they are still in good shape, and some of them
\nhave even reached the peak of their career. Soeharto was elected
\npresident seven times. Panggabean was an Armed Forces commander;
\nas was Benny Moerdani. Sudomo held different ministerial posts,
\nhis last being chairman of the supreme advisory council.<\/p>\n
Another figure, Hendropriyono, is now minister of
\ntransmigration, and one of his previous posts was chief of the
\nJakarta Military Command.<\/p>\n
Have they ever become a target of terrorism? I am pretty sure
\nthey have not. Former vice president Try Sutrisno's family even
\nhas a business relationship with Amir Biki's family (in fact,
\nAmir Biki was one of the victims of Tanjung Priok tragedy in
\n1984). Hendropriyono, who has intimate relations with former
\npolitical detainees and political prisoners, is now actively
\nimproving the socioeconomic conditions of the latter.<\/p>\n
Given these facts, the allegations concerning the existence of
\nIslamic hard-liners are an unfounded issue.<\/p>\n
