Archery coach upset with postponed training<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The national archery team's head coach Lee Jae-
\nhyun said on Monday he did not expect his trainees to win berths
\nat the 2000 Olympic Games after the Indonesian Archery
\nAssociation decided to postpone the centralized training session
\nfor one month to March.<\/p>\n
The South Korean coach said his archers would now have just
\nfour and a half months to prepare themselves for the World
\nChampionships, which also serve as a qualifying tournament for
\nthe Olympics.<\/p>\n
\"It's unlikely that they will reach their top form in time for
\nthe World Championships. I cannot guarantee that they can qualify
\nfor the Olympics,\" Lee said.<\/p>\n
Lee was in charge of the national team for the Asian Games in
\nBangkok last year. Indonesia, fielding eight women's and men's
\narchers, came home empty-handed.<\/p>\n
Despite the disappointing outcome in Bangkok, the national
\narchery body has extended Lee's contract until at least the world
\nmeet which will take place in Riom, France. He will have his term
\nextended if Indonesian archers qualify for the Olympics.<\/p>\n
The contract costs the association US$2,500 per month for
\nLee's salary.<\/p>\n
Indonesia will send its women's team to the world meet in
\nRiom, France from July 22 to July 26. It then will don national
\ncolors at the Asian Championships in Beijing from Sept. 1 to
\nSept. 5.<\/p>\n
The centralized training program was originally scheduled to
\nstart early this month.<\/p>\n
Chairman of the archery body Hayono Isman said after his
\ninduction ceremony on Monday that he has decided to delay
\ntraining on account of nontechnical matters.<\/p>\n
\"There are still some problems we haven't settled. I just want
\nto make sure that the training program will run untroubled,\"
\nHayono said.<\/p>\n
The biggest problem was probably the absence of leave permits
\nfrom the archers' respective offices, according to Hayono.<\/p>\n
Regular backbones Nurfitriyana Saiman Lantang, Kusuma Wardani,
\nRosena Gelanteh, Hamdiah, Dwi Purwanti and young archers Lusia
\nElizabeth and Ajeng Wulan have been summoned to attend the
\ntraining program.<\/p>\n
Hayono defended his choice of veterans, saying that young
\narchers had yet to reach the same standards as their seniors.<\/p>\n
\"In archery, age is not proven a disadvantage. Under the
\ncurrent competition system, archers aged between 30 and 35 years
\nold are in the best form,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Indonesia has always qualified for the Olympics since taking a
\nsilver in the 1988 Summer Games in Sydney, its first medal in the
