In its lawsuit, Apple stated that OpenAI recruited Apple\nemployees and induced them to hand over confidential materials, product\ndesigns, and other highly protected information. \u201cRecently, significant\nevidence has emerged indicating that individuals working at OpenAI have\nunlawfully taken Apple\u2019s confidential and proprietary information\nrelating to our unreleased technology, processes, and products,\u201d an\nApple spokesperson said. Drew Pusateri, a spokesperson for OpenAI, said\nthe company is reviewing the lawsuit documents filed in court. \u201cWe are\nnot interested in the trade secrets of other companies,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\nremain focused on building innovative technology that empowers people\neverywhere,\u201d he added. Under a separate agreement, Apple integrated\nOpenAI\u2019s chatbot, ChatGPT, into the operating systems of the iPhone,\niPad, and Mac. However, when Apple introduced an update to its Siri\nvoice assistant last month, the AI component used was based on Google\u2019s\nGemini AI model, not ChatGPT. Tensions between the two companies began\nto emerge last year when OpenAI spent $6.4 billion to acquire a hardware\nstartup founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive. Ive\u2019s startup, io\nProducts, is also named in Apple\u2019s lawsuit. \u201cOpenAI\u2019s nascent hardware\nbusiness now stands on a very fragile foundation, rotten to its core by\nits illegal reliance on unlawfully obtained trade secrets,\u201d Apple stated\nin its lawsuit documents. Tang Yew Tan, head of OpenAI\u2019s hardware\ndivision and a former Apple vice president, is named in the lawsuit.\nApple accuses Tan of bringing information about Apple\u2019s suppliers to\nOpenAI and encouraging OpenAI job candidates to disclose confidential\ncompany information. In the lawsuit documents, Apple alleges he directed\njob candidates still working at Apple to bring \u201coriginal components\u201d\nfrom Apple to their interviews for \u201cshow and tell\u201d sessions, where he\nand his team at OpenAI could obtain more of Apple\u2019s confidential\ninformation. Chang Liu, another former Apple employee named in the\nlawsuit who later worked at OpenAI, is accused of taking an Apple laptop\nwhen leaving the company.
