        "content": "<p>Jakarta (ANTARA) \u2014 Apple is being sued over alleged negligence in\nkeeping the App Store secure after three users said they lost more than\nUS$1.8 million (around Rp32.5 billion) after downloading a fake\ncryptocurrency wallet app available on the platform.<\/p>\n<p>According to a TechCrunch report on Monday (27 July), in a lawsuit\nfiled on Friday with the US District Court for the Northern District of\nCalifornia, the three plaintiffs claim they were deceived into\ndownloading an app called Sparrow Wallet.<\/p>\n<p>However, the app they downloaded turned out to be counterfeit, as the\nofficial Sparrow Wallet Bitcoin wallet is not available for iOS\ndevices.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit states that the plaintiffs transferred their Bitcoin\nassets to the app, causing them to lose substantial amounts of virtual\ncurrency.<\/p>\n<p>Plaintiff James Ramirez reportedly suffered losses of around\nUS$875,000 (approximately Rp15.8 billion), Christopher Ellis around\nUS$840,000 (around Rp15.2 billion), and Jalen Delgado lost approximately\nUS$120,000 (around Rp2.1 billion).<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit also highlights Apple\u2019s long-standing claim that the App\nStore is safer because all apps are reviewed before being published.<\/p>\n<p>In their filing, the plaintiffs state that Apple has positioned\nitself, along with its products and services, as offering a level of\nsecurity and trust superior to any rival technology company.<\/p>\n<p>They say the company also offers a guarantee of security for apps\ndistributed through the App Store by maintaining exclusive control over\nwhich applications are permitted on Apple devices.<\/p>\n<p>Through this exclusive control, Apple is judged to have structured\nits platform to ensure that consumers rely entirely on its promises of\nsafety and reliability.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the plaintiffs accuse Apple of knowing about the fake\napp\u2019s presence on the App Store.<\/p>\n<p>The allegation refers to public criticism from the creator of Sparrow\nBitcoin Wallet, Craig Raw, who previously stated that Apple had allowed\nthe imitation Sparrow Wallet app to remain available on its store.<\/p>\n<p>They are also demanding that Apple provide clearer warnings about the\nrisks of apps available on the App Store.<\/p>\n<p>Apple declined to comment on the legal proceedings.<\/p>\n<p>However, the company said it promptly removes apps found to be\nimpersonating other apps or violating App Store guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>Apple said there are currently no imitation Sparrow Wallet apps\navailable on the App Store.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the company cited a recent analysis of its ecosystem\nshowing that throughout 2025 it rejected more than 371,000 app\nsubmissions for copying other apps, containing spam, or potentially\nmisleading users.<\/p>",
