Thank God that the special session of the People's
\nConsultative Assembly (MPR) has been successfully concluded and
\nthat Ibu Megawati Soekarnoputri has been placed at the helm as
\nthe fifth president of the Republic of Indonesia.<\/p>\n
The is a real triumph and blessing from God the Almighty to
\nthis nation given the fact that prior to the special session
\nthere had been numerous rumors about the possible disintegration
\nof the country, and threats of instability and havoc if the MPR
\nrevoked the mandate conferred on Abdurrahman Wahid as president.<\/p>\n
We were filled with trepidation then, and the tension mounted
\nas we were threatened by jihad (holy war) if Gus Dur were ousted.
\nThank God, none of these threats came to pass.<\/p>\n
Now that it is all over, let's forgive one another. By so
\ndoing we will be able to achieve what we are all hoping for:
\nstability, security and prosperity. On this occasion I would like
\nto urge that:<\/p>\n
1. all experts, members of the political elite and others stop
\nmaking comments on sensitive political and economic matters,
\nparticularly to the mass media (print or electronic) which could
\npour oil on the fires. If you have a suggestion, express your
\nopinion in writing and channel it through the proper channels.<\/p>\n
2. we all give our full support and place our trust in the newly-
\nelected President so that she can perform her duties in leading
\nour beloved country.<\/p>\n
We firmly believe that with our support and commitment as well
\nas a conducive atmosphere, a better Indonesia will emerge from
\nthe crisis.<\/p>\n
