Appeal to MUI<\/p>\n

As a citizen, though not a member of any sociopolitical
\norganization, I feel obliged to make a proposal and appeal to
\nreligious leaders, especially those of the central and regional
\nboards of Indonesian Ulemas Council (MUI).<\/p>\n
In my view, MUI is not a political party nor a mass
\norganization, which only pursue group interests. In the reform
\nperiod of the national unity Cabinet under Abdurrahman Wahid and
\nMegawati Soekarnoputri and now under the new President resulting
\nfrom the 2001 Special Session of the People's consultative
\nAssembly (MPR), we have seen the outcome of the Habibie
\ngovernment's performance, i.e. the loss of East Timor as the 27th
\nprovince from the unitary state of the Republic of Indonesia.<\/p>\n
When Abdurrahman was president, several regions remained
\nturbulent, some even striving to secede. In different cities,
\nparticularly Jakarta, demonstrations and street fights became
\ncommonplace. Prices of daily necessities went beyond control and
\nthe public, notably poor families of the handicapped, were
\nrendered helpless.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the House of Representatives\/Assembly, 20 times as
\nbig as the Cabinet in membership, took no heed of the people's
\nsuffering. In fact, their salaries as well as expense funding
\ncome from public funds.<\/p>\n
As those in the House\/Assembly so far haven't had enough time
\nto consider the worsening living conditions of the population,
\nincluding disabled people, the MUI should intervene through a
\nruling or appeal. By the motivating force of this ruling, various
\nissues that may lead to the disintegration of the nation and
\nstate will hopefully be solved.<\/p>\n
A ruling by ulemas or instructions by religious figures to the
\nHouse\/Assembly members are likely to be heard and accepted. For
\ninstance, the MUI ruling during the 1999 election was apparently
\nvery effective and observed by all contestants. With such an
\nruling or appeal today, let's hope the House\/Assembly members
\nwill be prepared to care about the hardships suffered by the
\ncommon people.<\/p>\n
