THAILAND: A Thai court on Thursday sentenced five drug
\ntraffickers to death and a sixth to life in prison for
\ntrafficking 7.7 million methamphetamine tablets and 116 kilograms
\nof heroin.<\/p>\n
The suspects, all men, were arrested in January last year
\nwhile delivering the drugs. All were members of ethnic hill tribe
\nminorities from northern Thailand.<\/p>\n
The government of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, when it
\ntook power early last year, said it would use the death penalty
\nto deter the massive and growing trade in illegal drugs,
\nespecially methamphetamine.<\/p>\n
A Bangkok Criminal Court document identified those sentenced
\nto death Thursday as Chairath Tan, Supachai Krachaechan, Sunsiang
\nYoeh, Raksith Nimitrkul and Sombat Pinthong. The sixth convicted
\nman, Pratheep Thaweeapiradeeroj, received a life sentence because

CAMBODIA: Cambodia's King Norodom Sihanouk marked his 80th
\nbirthday on Thursday with an expression of hope amid a cloudy
\nfuture, as old ally Russia led the list of international well
\nwishers.<\/p>\n
Russian president Vladimir Putin was the first to offer the
\naging monarch his best wishes and thanked Sihanouk for his wisdom
\nand experience that has helped lead Cambodia out of its tragic
\npast.<\/p>\n
In a statement, Sihanouk said he and his people had \"suffered
\nindescribable pain during the cruel era of the Khmer Rouge\" who
\nruled Cambodia between 1975 and 1979.<\/p>\n
Celebrations for the revered monarch, who reigns but does not
\nrule, kicked off late Wednesday with a spectacular fireworks
\ndisplay over the royal palace with thousands of adoring subjects

\nthrough an office block in Vietnam's southern commercial capital
\nkilling at least 61 people, authorities said on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Foreign ministry official Nguyen Van Niem said police were
\ninvestigating whether builders working in the Blue discotheque on
\nthe third floor of the seven-story Saigon International Business
\nCenter sparked Tuesday's blaze.<\/p>\n
A local reporter for a state-run newspaper, requesting
\nanonymity, said investigators smelt what they thought were
\nchemicals used for welding and said police were hunting for the
\nworkers who fled the scene.<\/p>\n
