        "content": "<p>The Chairman of the Employment Division at the Indonesian Employers\u2019\nAssociation (Apindo), Bob Azam, believes the issue of the growing wave\nof layoff threats must be examined from its root causes. He cited the\nexample of layoff threats stemming from rising industrial gas prices.\n\u201cThis has been an industrial gas issue for years. So perhaps the problem\nis not the price but the supply. We are currently facing supply\nproblems. Not just gas, but electricity and so on. Our energy\nprocurement is problematic due to the Iran-America war. So what should\nbe highlighted is not the layoffs, but the problem itself. That is what\nwe must tackle,\u201d Bob Azam said when contacted on Wednesday (24\/6).<\/p>\n<p>He explained that each sector faces various challenges, but the\nlatent issue is continuously declining competitiveness. \u201cBecause wage\nincreases outpace productivity, then there are policy changes. Now there\nare energy problems on top of that. We must fix this consistently, not\nreactively. We appear reactive. It will eventually become politicised,\u201d\nBob stated.<\/p>\n<p>He urged the government to address structural problems, such as\ninefficient logistics that create bottlenecks. \u201cThen there is the\nhigh-cost economy. Restitution issues for export-oriented manufacturing\nindustries are crucial because they affect cash flow. There are also\ndifficulties with raw materials. These should be resolved more quickly\nand easily. The rest are global issues, like unbalanced logistics\ncontainers,\u201d Bob explained. \u201cSo the issue is not the layoffs. We must\nfix the causes. We already have a debottlenecking team. So I think we\nshould handle the causes,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, Apindo continues to prepare preventive actions to\navoid layoffs. \u201cWe already have 12 measures to prevent layoffs. We are\nsocialising these to companies so they can be implemented, including\nfurloughing employees, reducing shifts, and cutting overtime,\u201d Bob Azam\nconcluded.<\/p>",
