Apindo alarmed by violent strikes<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian Employers Association (Apindo)
\nexpressed deep concern on Wednesday over the increasing wave of
\nviolent labor strikes, which it said had affected the business
\nclimate in the country.<\/p>\n
Willy H. Rawung, Apindo's deputy treasurer, said numerous
\nforeign investors had postponed investing in Indonesia because of
\nviolent labor strikes and the absence of legal certainty.<\/p>\n
\"A number of investors from Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan and
\nSouth Korea have postponed entering Indonesia because of the
\nanarchistic labor strikes and weak law enforcement,\" he told
\njournalists here on Friday.<\/p>\n
He cited as examples the recent burning of a factory in
\nTangerang, violent labor strikes at the House of Representatives
\nand the beating of a businessman in Surabaya, East Java.<\/p>\n
Rawung criticized the government for failing to enforce the
\nlaw, to promote industrial relations and provide security
\nguarantees for employers.<\/p>\n
\"Most employers have no objection to labor strikes provided
\nthey are in accordance with legal procedures,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said the government should take measures against employers
\nviolating the law as well as against violent labor rallies.<\/p>\n
He regretted that in the past seven months of being the
\nmanpower minister, Bomer Pasaribu had yet to make any progress in
\nsolving labor disputes and promoting better industrial relations.<\/p>\n
Rawung, who will represent Apindo at the June 14 International
\nLabor Conference in Geneva, said the poor situation in Indonesia
\nwould not support a speech at the meeting by President
\nAbdurrahman Wahid promoting investment in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
\"Despite a good presidential speech at the meeting, the
\ninternational community will not believe in the government's
\ncommitment to legal certainty in Indonesia. The President's
\nspeech will be just rhetoric,\" he said. (rms)<\/p>",
