APEC recognizes RI accreditation body<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Pacific Cooperation Council (PAC), an
\naccreditation body established by APEC member countries, will
\nformally recognize certification and accreditation issued by the
\nIndonesian standardization board.<\/p>\n
The chief of the National Standardization Agency, Herudi
\nKartowisastro, said recognition was agreed upon in the signing of
\na multilateral agreement at a PAC meeting in Bali on Thursday.<\/p>\n
He said that with the signing of the agreement, all APEC
\nmembers would recognize certification and accreditation issued by
\nthe Indonesian agency.<\/p>\n
\"The recognition means that the agency has successfully passed
\npeer evaluation and fulfills international standards,\" he said in
\na statement.<\/p>\n
Herudi said that Indonesia and Thailand, which also signed the
\nagreement on Thursday, were the eighth and ninth countries
\nrespectively to sign such an agreement, which were first
\nintroduced three years ago.<\/p>\n
The first countries to sign agreements were Australia, Canada,
\nChina and Japan, in January 1998, followed by Malaysia and
\nSingapore in November 1998 and South Korea in July 1999, he said.<\/p>\n
PAC, established in 1993, is a regional cooperation forum
\nbetween accreditation bodies in APEC countries. Its members
\ncomprise 19 accreditation bodies in the Asia Pacific.<\/p>\n
The meeting in Bali was attended by 50 delegations as well as
\nobservers from the United States, Germany and the Association of
\nSouth East Asian Nation's (ASEAN) secretariat. (10)<\/p>",
