Shanghai (ANTARA) - Representatives of the Asia-Pacific Economic\nCooperation (APEC) member economies met in Shanghai to prepare the\nagenda for the APEC Summit, which is scheduled to takeplace in November\n2026.<\/p>\n
\u201cToday, the baton for China\u2019s APEC Year has passed to Shanghai. This\nSenior Officials\u2019 Meeting (SOM) serves as a link between the previous\nand subsequent stages,\u201d stated China\u2019s Executive Vice Foreign Minister\nMa Zhaoxu during the opening of the APEC SOM in Shanghai on Monday.<\/p>\n
This SOM is the second held in China and took place on 18-19 May\n2026. The first APEC SOM 2026 was held from 1-10 February 2026 in\nGuangzhou, Guangdong Province, attended by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang\nYi to deliver opening remarks and serve as the first official meeting\nunder China\u2019s hosting.<\/p>\n
Indonesia was represented at the Shanghai APEC SOM by the Director\nGeneral for Asia Pacific and Africa of the Indonesian Ministry of\nForeign Affairs, Santo Darmosumarto.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will review the progress achieved during the first half of this\nyear, detail the design of outcomes, summarise initial achievements, and\nlay a strong foundation for various important activities in the second\nhalf of the year, particularly for the outcomes of the Leaders\u2019 Informal\nMeeting,\u201d Ma added.<\/p>\n
Ma noted that during the Informal Senior Officials\u2019 Meeting in\nShenzhen, APEC members expressed their desire to build an Asia-Pacific\ncommunity and promote shared prosperity as the primary goal for the 2026\nAPEC hosting.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have also established three priority areas: openness, innovation,\nand cooperation, which officially launch the series of events for\nChina\u2019s APEC Year,\u201d said Ma.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, during the APEC SOM in Guangzhou, Ma mentioned that\nForeign Minister Wang Yi encouraged all parties to work together to\nensure the Leaders\u2019 Meeting produces a meaningful list of\nachievements.<\/p>\n
\u201cAPEC members also uphold the spirit of cooperation by conducting\nin-depth discussions on trade and investment, connectivity, the digital\neconomy, innovative growth, and other fields, as well as formulating a\nseries of outcome ideas and work plans. I express my appreciation for\nthe efforts made by all parties and am satisfied with the progress we\nhave achieved,\u201d Ma added.<\/p>\n
Ma noted that the current international situation is fraught with\nchange and volatility, including a resurgence of unilateralism and\nprotectionism, alongside worsening energy and food crises, which are\novershadowing global economic growth.<\/p>\n
The Asia-Pacific region, however, is deemed capable of overcoming\nexternal risks and challenges while maintaining relatively rapid\ndevelopment momentum, further highlighting its position as a global\ngrowth engine.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn last year\u2019s APEC meeting, President Xi Jinping earnestly stated\nthat China will follow the trends of the times, listen to the\naspirations of all members, and join hands with all parties to build an\nAsia-Pacific community, thereby providing new impetus for peace and\ndevelopment in the Asia-Pacific region and the world,\u201d Ma revealed.<\/p>\n
Ma also stated that the theme adopted for the Shanghai APEC\nSOM\u2014trade, connectivity, innovation, and development\u2014is closely aligned\nwith China\u2019s three priority areas for this year\u2019s APEC hosting:\nopenness, innovation, and cooperation.<\/p>\n
\u201cAll of these are effectively connected to and support the Putrajaya\nVision 2040, serving as important pillars for the development of the\nAsia-Pacific community. On this basis, we will design the outcome\ndocuments for the Leaders\u2019 Meeting. We hope all parties will continue to\nprovide constructive views and valuable contributions through active\ndiscussion,\u201d Ma said.<\/p>\n
China is hosting APEC 2026 under the grand theme \u201cBuilding the\nAsia-Pacific Community for Shared Prosperity\u201d. The summit is planned for\nNovember 2026 in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province.<\/p>\n
APEC is a cooperation forum comprising 21 economies in the Pacific\nRim, established in 1989. Its members include Australia, Brunei\nDarussalam, Canada, Chile, China, Hong Kong-China, Indonesia, Japan,\nSouth Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, the Philippines, Peru, Papua\nNew Guinea, Russia, Singapore, Taiwan, the United States, and\nVietnam.<\/p>\n
Apec cooperation is non-political, characterised by the membership of\nHong Kong and Taiwan. Members are referred to as \u201ceconomies\u201d as each\nmember interacts as an economic entity rather than a nation-state.<\/p>\n
The primary objective of APEC is outlined in the long-term Putrajaya\nVision 2040, agreed upon in 2020.
