APEC and human security<\/p>\n
Some thinkers tend to criticize APEC for having too broad an
\nagenda, but the Asia-Pacific rim ministers' commitment to tackle
\nconcerns about \"human security\" issues is not only relevant but
\nessential for the prosperity of the diverse economies in the
\nregion.<\/p>\n
The ministers held out the concept of human security as the
\nbasic requirement for social stability and advancement and
\nspecifically called for positive cooperation among nations in
\nactions for counterterrorism, health security and emergency
\npreparedness for disasters, as well as energy security.<\/p>\n
Critics may point to these subjects as evidence of bloated
\nconcerns at the APEC forum. Yet, the Asia-Pacific rim, which
\nencompasses extremely diverse economies and societies with
\ndifferent cultures and traditions, has stepped onto a stage that
\ncalls for great emphasis on spontaneous international
\ncooperation, particularly between more advanced nations and
\ndeveloping ones, to address the many emerging problems in the
\n21st century.
