APB-Net talks fail to reach agreement<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The preparatory talks in Tokyo for the second
\nmeeting of the Asia Pacific Business Network (APB-Net), which
\nwill be held in Osaka on Oct. 22 and Oct. 23, are deadlocked,
\nHusein Aminuddin, chief of the Indonesian delegation, said
\nyesterday.<\/p>\n
\"Last week's meeting failed to agree on an agenda, as well as
\nother matters to be tabled at APB-Net II in Osaka because the
\nJapanese delegation, as the hosts, forced its wishes against what
\nhad been agreed at APB-Net I in Jakarta last August,\" Aminuddin
\nadded.<\/p>\n
He said the Japanese hosts made the first mistake by changing
\nthe composition of business delegates invited to take part in the
\nTokyo meeting.<\/p>\n
\"Only the representatives of business organizations which have
\nclose cooperation with the Federation of Economic Organizations
\nwere invited to the preparatory talks,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Since APB-Net I in Jakarta was attended by representatives of
\nthe chambers of commerce of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation
\n(APEC) forum member economies, many of the delegates in the Tokyo
\nmeeting were not apprised of the developments of the private
\nbusiness forum, Aminuddin added.<\/p>\n
The APEC forum includes Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile,
\nChina, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New
\nZealand, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Singapore, South
\nKorea, Thailand, Taiwan and the United States.<\/p>\n
APB-Net was inaugurated in Jakarta last August as an informal
\nforum designed to develop practical business networking among
\nindividual enterprises in member economies.<\/p>\n
According to Aminuddin, the Japanese delegation also did not
\npay any attention to the agreement reached at APB-Net I on the
\npromotion of business linkages between medium and small-scale
\nenterprises.<\/p>\n
\"Japan even suggested that APB-Net be developed into a formal
\norganization. That is against the agreement in Jakarta, which
\nset the forum as an informal organization to avoid duplication of
\nsimilar business organizations within the region,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Given the deadlock at the preparatory talks, Indonesian,
\nCanadian and Australian delegations wondered whether it would be
\nnecessary to attend the APB-Net II In Osaka next October,
\nAminuddin added. Aminuddin is also Vice Chairman of the
\nIndonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry for Trade and
