Apartment should be promoted intensively<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Governor Surjadi Soedirdja emphasized yesterday
\nthe importance of intensifying the promotion of apartment
\nbuildings to all classes of society.<\/p>\n
The governor said that intensive promotion is very important
\nto encourage Jakartans to live in apartments.<\/p>\n
The city administration is aggressively promoting the
\napartments as the best solution to the land shortage.<\/p>\n
\"All city officials must back up the promotion program to help
\nthe city reduce its slum areas,\" Surjadi said after accepting a
\nreport from the promotion team which consists of representatives
\nfrom a number of agencies, including the City Planning and
\nDevelopment Agency and the housing office.<\/p>\n
The governor said find a way to coax Jakartans to move into
\napartments is the priority. The public should realize that sooner
\nor later they will have to live in apartments because they have
\nno other choice, he said.<\/p>\n
\"The activity should not only target people who have already
\nlived in apartment buildings but others who want to move there as
\nwell,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Basically, Surjadi said, apartment buildings are designed to
\ngive people a better place to live. The difficulties in
\ncontrolling urbanization has caused an imbalance between the
\npopulation and the availability of land, which has led to slums
\npopping up in various parts of the city.<\/p>\n
The governor also urged city-owned housing company PD Sarana
\nJaya, and state-owned housing company Perumnas in charge of
\nmanaging apartment buildings, to be selective in accepting
\noperators.<\/p>\n
\"Don't just let anybody use the space without any permits,\"
\nthe governor said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, head of the City Housing Office, Ongky Sukasah,
\nreported that most apartments dwellers are people who come to the
\ncity from other provinces in Indonesia who used to live in slums.<\/p>\n
A survey conducted by the office shows that most residents are
\nhigh school graduates and work on daily contracts with salaries
\nranging from Rp 100,000 (US$45) to Rp 250,000 a month.<\/p>\n
\"Most of them complain that their apartments are too small
\ncompared to their former houses,\" Ongky said.<\/p>\n
The City Housing Office plans to build about 3,150 apartments
\na year between 1995 and 2000. (yns)<\/p>",
