Any contraceptive will do: Minister<\/p>\n
DILI, East Timor: State Minister of Population\/chairman of the
\nNational Family Planning Board Ida Bagus Oka said it was no
\nlonger necessary to debate which was the best contraceptive
\nmethod as long as couples continued practicing family planning.<\/p>\n
\"The method of contraception need not be disputed, what's
\nimportant is that we control births in the country,\" he said in
\nDili on Sunday, as quoted by Antara.<\/p>\n
\"We're not saying people can't have babies, that would violate
\nhuman rights, we just want to regulate births,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Family planning programs usually advocate the most effective
\ncontraceptives. Condom usage, for instance, is not as highly
\nrecommended as other family planning methods.<\/p>\n
The Demography Institute of the University of Indonesia
\nearlier recommended that couples use traditional methods in light
\nof rising prices of all necessities.<\/p>\n
The minister said a couple could refrain from intercourse
\nduring the woman's fertile period. Natural methods could be
\ncombined with the use of condoms, Ida Bagus Oka said, but noted
\nthat the use was only about 0.8 percent compared to other
\nmethods.<\/p>\n
He stated that funds for contraceptives were enough to last to
\nthe end of the fiscal year which ends in April, citing assistance
\nfrom the World Bank, the Asia Development Bank, Australia,
\nFinland and United States, among others. The funds are for
\nsupplying free contraceptives to poor families.<\/p>",
