Anwar report to be published<\/p>\n
KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters): The Malaysian government will make
\npublic the findings of an independent panel investigating
\ninjuries sacked finance minister Anwar Ibrahim suffered in police
\ncustody, Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said.<\/p>\n
\"What is the point of setting up the inquiry if the report is
\nnot to be made public,\" the official Bernama news agency quoted
\nMahathir as telling reporters on Langkawi Island off the
\nnorthwestern coast of Peninsular Malaysia.<\/p>\n
Last month, the government decided to set up a four-member
\ncommission to investigate the injuries, including a black eye,
\nwhich Anwar suffered after he was arrested in September. But it
\nwas not clear whether its findings would be made public.<\/p>\n
Anwar said in September that he had been blindfolded and
\nbeaten until unconscious and bleeding.<\/p>\n
The federal police chief resigned last month after the
\nattorney-general pinned the blame for Anwar's injuries on the
\npolice.<\/p>\n
A police investigation failed after a two-month investigation
\nto identify the person or persons who hit Anwar, prompting calls
\nfor an independent commission of inquiry.<\/p>\n
While opposition leaders and non-governmental organizations
\nhad welcomed the formation of the commission, they called on it
\nto make its findings public and some criticized the composition
\nof the panel.<\/p>\n
The commission is headed by former Chief Justice Anuar Zainal
\nAbidin. Its other members are former Appeals Court Judge Mahadev
\nShankar, former Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) president and
\northopedic surgeon Dr. Yeoh Poh Hong and former Attorney-General
\nAbu Talib Othman.<\/p>\n
Mahathir said the commission, which will report to the
\nMalaysian king, should be given sufficient time to complete its
\ninquiry although \"we want it to be done as quickly as possible\".<\/p>\n
Asked to comment on a newspaper report that the commission
\nwould complete its investigation soon, Mahathir said: \"I don't
\nknow and I'm not aware of it.\"<\/p>\n
The prime minister dismissed opposition criticism of two of
\nthe members of the commission. \"I did not appoint members of the
\ncommission,\" he said.<\/p>",
