Anwar denied surgery overseas<\/p>\n
KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters): The Malaysian government said on
\nWednesday that jailed former finance minister Anwar Ibrahim's
\nrequest for spinal surgery abroad was unjustified as treatment
\nwas available locally.<\/p>\n
Anwar, laid up in a government hospital with a slipped disc
\nfor nearly two months since being moved from prison, is seeking
\nendoscopic micro spinal surgery (EMS), which he says carries
\nminimal risk but is unavailable in Malaysia.<\/p>\n
Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi told
\nreporters that Anwar, who is serving a 15 year jail term on
\ncorruption and sodomy convictions, can be treated in Malaysia.<\/p>\n
But Anwar says the conventional surgery offered by government
\ndoctors is too risky. He wants surgeons at the Alpha-Klinik, a
\nmedical center in Munich, Germany, to carry out the operation and
\nhas asked the government to allow a specialist from the clinic to
\nvisit Malaysia to diagnose him.<\/p>",
