Antiterrorism bill finalized<\/p>\n
NUSA DUA, BALI: Minister of Justice and Human Rights Yusril Ihza
\nMahendra said here on Monday that his office had completed the
\ndrafting of the antiterrorism bill.<\/p>\n
\"The draft law has been finalized after being discussed by the
\nCabinet. It will be presented to President Megawati
\n(Soekarnoputri) tomorrow (Tuesday) or the day after tomorrow,\" he
\ntold journalists in Nusa Dusa, Bali, which was rocked by
\nterrorist bombings on Saturday night.<\/p>\n
However, Yusril could not say when the government would submit
\nthe antiterrorism bill to the House of Representatives for
\ndeliberation.<\/p>\n
The minister hoped that the House would make the deliberation
\nof the bill a priority after the barbaric Bali attacks killed
\nnearly 200 people, mostly foreigners.<\/p>\n
He asked all sides not to be suspicious of the controversial
\nbill, which, according to many human rights advocates, could
\nspark extensive human rights abuses across Indonesia.<\/p>\n
The bill would be effective in allowing the security forces to
\ntake action against suspected terrorists, the minister said.
