Antismoking website launched<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the
\nMinistry of National Education and the World Health Organization
\n(WHO), launched a website on Monday for school students as part
\nof a campaign for the free tobacco movement.<\/p>\n
"With the website, it is expected that students can
\ncommunicate (with their peers), obtain facts, information and
\neducation on everything related to smoking," head of the national
\neducation ministry's research and development division Boediono
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Boediono also said that students were expected to invite
\nfriends and family members to use the websites to find facts
\nabout the risks and dangers of smoking.<\/p>\n
The newly launched websites are http:\/\/www.bebasrokok.com and
\nits English version, http:\/\/www.ash-free.com.<\/p>\n
Designed by PT Dhaft Buana Informatika and funded by WHO, the
\nwebsite would later be managed by the national education
\nministry.<\/p>\n
In the website, browsers could find articles among others, on
\nwhy people smoke, the effect of smoking on health, and types of
\npoisons inside a cigarette. Website visitors could also join in a
\ndiscussion forum.<\/p>\n
Boediono claimed that the antismoking campaign would be
\neffective if it was targeted toward students who had not started
\nto smoke yet or who were curious about it.<\/p>\n
"... I receive reports that smoking begins mostly among school
\nstudents, either at junior high or senior high school. Therefore
\nour website is designed for their age group with humorous logos
\nand simple language so that they are easily able to assimilate
\nthe information," Boediono remarked.<\/p>\n
Data from WHO showed that in 2000, around 1.1 billion people
\nor one third of the world population, above the age of 15, were
\nsmokers.<\/p>\n
The number of Indonesian smokers is believed to have reached
\n141 million.<\/p>\n
The government has named schools nonsmoking areas.<\/p>\n
A government-endorsed smoke-free advocacy group is launching a
\nnationwide campaign to persuade companies to declare a smoke-free
\nenvironment in connection with the World No Tobacco Day which
