Antidrug program targets schools<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Executives of the Bersama antidrug non-
\ngovernmental organization (NGO) have met with City Council
\nrepresentatives to discuss the launch of an anti-narcotics
\ncampaign here.<\/p>\n
Bersama chairman Putera Astaman said at Wednesday's meeting
\nthat the campaign was aimed at building awareness among local
\nyouths of the danger of drug abuse.<\/p>\n
The antidrug campaign will visit all city schools, from
\nelementary to senior high, Astaman, a retired police major
\ngeneral, said.<\/p>\n
Mochammad Amman, the chief of Bersama's working group
\ndivision, said: \"We haven't decided the exact date to launch the
\ncampaign but we hope that it will start this year.\"<\/p>\n
Amman highlighted the importance of children knowing the
\ndanger of drugs and alcohol abuse in their early years.<\/p>\n
\"If they are anti-narcotics from childhood it will be easier
\nto prevent them from abusing drugs later,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Bersama, established in 1978, is the only organization
\nappointed by the government to coordinate all antidrug campaigns
\nin Indonesia.<\/p>\n
The organization is a member of the International Federation
\nof NGOs which has links to the UN's World Health Organization,
\nthe International Labor Organization and UNESCO.<\/p>\n
President Soeharto is the patron of Bersama and several
\ncabinet ministers are among its advisory board members.<\/p>\n
Amman also underlined the need for the school students
\norganization, OSIS, to participate in the campaign.<\/p>\n
\"A lack of school attention to this issue can foster the
\nproblems of drug abuse,\" he said. (07\/bsr)<\/p>",
