I can't help wondering about the news that the House of
\nRepresentatives (DPR) and the government have reached an
\nagreement to merge the Public Servants' Wealth Audit Commission
\n(KPKPN) with the soon-to-be established anticorruption
\ncommission. It was announced at a time when the KPKPN was
\nstarting to pave the way in helping eradicate corruption in this
\ncountry and showing significant progress in investigating the
\nwealth of government officials.<\/p>\n
I share the views of Todung Mulya Lubis and Hendardi, who said
\nthat the incorporation of KPKPN into the anticorruption
\ncommission would mean a step backward in the effort to eradicate
\ncorruption because the proposed commission has yet to be
\nestablished and would have to start from the very beginning,
\nwhereas KPKPN has started investigating the officials' wealth.<\/p>\n
We can learn a lesson from a similar commission that in early
\n2000 had a joint team established for the eradication of
\ncorruption, which, until its dissolution in early 2002, came up
\nwith nothing in terms of investigating, prosecuting and taking
\ncorruptors to court.<\/p>\n
My suggestion therefore is that members of the DPR must be
\nbroad-minded in their way of thinking rather than showing their
\narrogance (to quote Hendardi's words) and leave the KPKPN and the
\nanticorruption commission to work on their own.<\/p>\n
The reason is that the function of the KPKPN is to investigate
\nthe wealth of officials. And if there are indications of
\nmisappropriation of state funds, it is the task of the
\nanticorruption commission to prosecute them.<\/p>\n
