        "content": "<p>The Singapore government is preparing more than 300 cooling centres\nin various locations as part of its national plan to deal with\nheatwaves. These facilities will be opened when weather conditions meet\nthe heatwave criteria set by the government.<\/p>\n<p>According to The Straits Times, the cooling centres will be equipped\nwith air conditioning and seating. Their locations include community\ncentres, several Residents\u2019 Committee centres and Residents\u2019 Network\ncentres, as well as some indoor sports halls.<\/p>\n<p>Calvin Chong, Director of the Energy and Climate Policy Division at\nSingapore\u2019s Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment (MSE), said\nthe locations of the cooling centres will be announced when the official\nheatwave response plan is activated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe public will be given at least four days\u2019 advance warning of an\nimpending heatwave through the national weather app myENV,\u201d Chong said\nin an interview with The Straits Times and Lianhe Zaobao.<\/p>\n<p>According to Chong, vulnerable groups will be prioritised if the\ncapacity of the cooling centres approaches its maximum limit. These\ngroups include the elderly and people who require special attention\nregarding heat exposure.<\/p>\n<p>Singapore is currently facing a combination of weather conditions\nthat could significantly increase temperatures. The south-west monsoon\nseason, which tends to be dry, is occurring simultaneously with the El\nNi\u00f1o phenomenon, which brings hotter and drier conditions to the\nregion.<\/p>\n<p>In Singapore, heatwave status is declared when the average daily\nmaximum temperature reaches at least 35 degrees Celsius for three\nconsecutive days, while the average daily temperature reaches at least\n29 degrees Celsius.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists warn that the current El Ni\u00f1o has the potential to develop\ninto an exceptionally strong phenomenon, which some scientists refer to\nas a \u201cGodzilla\u201d event.
