        "content": "<p>Anti Malaria herb found in Irian<\/p>\n<p>JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya: Noted medicine man Hembing Wijayakusuma<br>\nsaid he has discovered that a herb called artemisia annua which<br>\nis found in Jayawijaya district, Irian Jaya, contains a substance<br>\nwhich serves as an effective anti-malarial drug.<\/p>\n<p>Hembing, who has written extensively on traditional herbal<br>\nmedicines, told Antara yesterday that the existence of the herb<br>\nin Irian Jaya would be officially reported to the World Health<br>\nOrganization (WHO).<\/p>\n<p>Standing 50 centimeters tall, the plant contains the chemical<br>\nartemisinin which can counteract malaria.<\/p>\n<p>Hembing said he had started to cultivate the herb in the<br>\nWamena and Puncak Jaya districts of the province because the<br>\nareas had suitable climates.<\/p>\n<p>A similar herb, known for its anti-malarial properties, is<br>\nfound in Japan, India, China, Vietnam, Bangladesh and Thailand,<br>\nhe said.<\/p>",
