Anti-Israel rallies continue<\/p>\n
SEMARANG: A group of students from the Indonesian Muslim
\nStudent Action Front (KAMMI) protested here on Monday the
\ngovernment's plan to establish economic ties with Israel.<\/p>\n
The students marched from Diponegoro University to the
\nprovincial legislative council, waving banners and yelling
\nslogans condemning what they called Israel's human rights
\nviolations.<\/p>\n
\"The United Nations resolution which obliges Israel to return
\nPalestinian land was ignored, so why bother having any
\nrelationship with Israel,\" rally coordinator Muhammad Arifin
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The protesters said President Abdurrahman Wahid's plan to
\nestablish ties with the Jewish state was contrary to the 1945
\nConstitution. \"Opening ties with Israel would signal our
\nacceptance of Israel's colonialism in Palestine,\" Muhammad said.<\/p>\n
In Medan, North Sumatra, hundreds of students and activists
\nfrom the Anti-Israel Zionist Community Forum staged a similar
\nprotest at the provincial legislature. Also at the protest were
\nactivists from KAMMI and the Association of Muslim Students.<\/p>\n
\"We demand that legislators exercise their right to question
\nMinister of Foreign Affairs Alwi Shihab over the controversial
\npolicy,\" protest leader Alisyahputra Harahap said. Several local
