Anti-dumping measures for fair trade, says EU<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Head of the European Union's (EU) representation
\nin Indonesia defended yesterday the anti-dumping measures taken
\nby the EU as a means of ensuring an honest and competitive
\ntrading system.<\/p>\n
\"Those measures are to ensure fair trading,\" EU's ambassador
\nKlauspeter Schmallenbach said.<\/p>\n
He told journalists at the French embassy yesterday that the
\nanti-dumping measures were not rashly pursued and taken only
\nafter a comprehensive investigation of the charges.<\/p>\n
Anti-dumping measures occur when a country imposes duties on
\nanother's products on grounds that they are imported at cheaper
\nprices than those on the domestic market.<\/p>\n
Schmallenbach was speaking at a briefing on the ascendancy of
\nFrance as head of the 15-nation organization. The presidency is
\nrotated among EU members every six months.<\/p>\n
The European Union, an evolution of the European Economic
\nCommunity (EEC), which was set up in 1957, currently comprises
\nAustria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Britain,
\nGreece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal,
\nSpain and Sweden.<\/p>\n
According to Schmallenbach, there are eight charges of dumping
\nagainst Indonesian products now pending investigation.<\/p>\n
The most recent case was formally charged last week when the
\nEU accused Indonesia of dumping shoe products on the European
\nmarket.<\/p>\n
Other allegations in the last year also came in the area of
\ntextile products such as polyester yarn, and bicycles.<\/p>\n
Schmallenbach pledged that the allegations would be inquired
\nfairly, according to established procedures.<\/p>\n
Nevertheless, just a week ago World Trade Organization chief
\nPeter Sutherland warned of the damaging consequences on the
\nabuses of anti-dumping measures.<\/p>\n
French Ambassador Dominique Girard explained yesterday that
\nduring its presidency of the EU, France would focus on economic
\ndevelopment and job creation.<\/p>\n
Attention would also be given to promoting European security
\nand asserting the diversity of European culture.<\/p>\n
Spanish ambassador A. Sanchez-Jara said that Asia would be
\namong the highlighted geographical areas when Spain assumes EU's
\npresidency in July.<\/p>\n
He also pointed out the likelihood of an EU-Asia summit that
\nmight take place within the coming year.(mds)<\/p>",
