Anti-crime drive set for Ramadhan<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Jakarta Military Commander Maj. Gen. Wiranto has
\nsaid that the municipal branch of the National Stability
\nCoordination Agency (Bakorstanasda) will go all out to prevent
\ncrime during the coming fasting month of Ramadhan.<\/p>\n
The operation code named 'Operasi Bersih' is intended to counter
\nthe increased number of crimes expected during the fasting month,
\nwhich starts this week, Wiranto told reporters over the weekend
\nafter closing an Armed Forces's civic mission program at
\nSukarukun village, Sukatani district, Bekasi.<\/p>\n
The operation will focus on areas with a high frequency of
\ncrime, Wiranto told the Antara news agency.<\/p>\n
He said that because reports compiled jointly with a number of
\nlaw-enforcement related institutions show that many crimes take
\nplace early in the morning, the operation officers have been
\nordered to be on the alert during that time.<\/p>\n
The two-star general assured, "We'll do our best to safeguard
\nthe security in the city so as to enable the public to undertake
\ntheir activities safely and peacefully ahead of the Idul Fitri
\nfestivity."<\/p>\n
Data at city police headquarters show that 1,374 crimes took
\nplace during the fasting month last year, of which 1,257 were
\nstreet crimes, ranging from robbery, assault and vehicle thefts.<\/p>\n
The number of traffic accidents was also high because of the
\nmany adolescents speeding around on motorcycles at daybreak.<\/p>\n
At the closing ceremony for the ABRI civic mission, Wiranto
\nreiterated that the program is intended mainly to support the
\ngovernment program on alleviating poverty. (hhr)<\/p>",
