Anti-counterfeiting unit works quietly<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Even if there hasn't been much in the news about
\ncurrency counterfeiting lately, it doesn't mean that all's well.<\/p>\n
Chief of the State Intelligence Board (Bakin) Soedibyo
\ndisclosed yesterday that a special unit dealing with cases of
\ncurrency counterfeiting is active all the time.<\/p>\n
The difference with the anti-narcotic campaign is that given
\nthe nature of its work, this unit works quietly to avoid any kind
\nof publicity.<\/p>\n
\"Any hint that counterfeit money is in circulation will affect
\nthe people's trust and consequently affect the rupiah,\" said
\nSoedibyo, who is also the chief coordinator of this special unit
\nthat consists mostly of police officers.<\/p>\n
\"It's a matter of policy that these cases do not get exposed
\nby the media,\" he added.<\/p>\n
Police are continually fighting these counterfeit syndicates.<\/p>\n
The results are only made public when the culprits are brought
\nto trial, Soedibyo said.<\/p>\n
The problem is complex, he said, and therefore the personnel
\nrequire special skills.<\/p>\n
A lot also depends on the tellers at money changers and banks
\nand their ability to detect counterfeit money, he said.<\/p>\n
And the problems get worse. \"We are not simply handling rupiah
\ncounterfeiting now. We're also dealing with dollars and other
\ncurrencies,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The campaign originally required the coordination of Bakin, as
\nstipulated in a 1971 presidential executive order. The other
\nproblems included narcotic and youth delinquency.<\/p>\n
Because of the complex nature of the problem, it was then
\ndecided that a special unit to deal with currency counterfeiting
