        "content": "<p>Anti-corruption team nearly ready, ICW left off list<\/p>\n<p>A'an Suryana<br>\nThe Jakarta Post<br>\nJakarta<\/p>\n<p>A minister said he has provided facilities for a small team set <br>\nup by the government to select candidates nominated for the <br>\nCommission for Eradication of Corruption (KPTK) to fulfill the <br>\nrequirements of an anticorruption law.<\/p>\n<p>Minister of Justice and Human Rights Yusril Ihza Mahendra said<br>\nhere on Thursday that the small team would have a secretariat at <br>\nthe Justice and Human Rights Ministry and other facilities would <br>\nbe given to allow them to complete the selection according to the <br>\ndeadline set by the law.<\/p>\n<p>He made the statement to follow up the issuance of a <br>\npresidential decree which was signed by President Megawati <br>\nSoekarnoputri on Sept. 21, a day before her departure to attend <br>\nthe 58th UN General Assembly in New York.<\/p>\n<p>The team will be headed by Romli Atmasasmita, a senior <br>\nofficial at the ministry, with two deputy chairmen, a secretary <br>\nand ten other members.<\/p>\n<p>The team consists of senior lawyers, legal observers, <br>\nlecturers, as well as government and police officials. Among <br>\nnoted figures are lawyer Adnan Buyung Nasution, Harkristuti <br>\nHarkrisnowo of the University of Indonesia, Abdul Gani Abdullah <br>\nand Insp. Gen. Sukamto, the head of legal division at the <br>\nNational Police headquarters.<\/p>\n<p>The team is expected to complete the selection process within <br>\ntwo months so that the commission can start working by Dec. 27 as <br>\nwas regulated by Law No. 30\/2002 on anti-corruption.<\/p>\n<p>When Yusril was asked why Teten Masduki, the coordinator of <br>\nthe Indonesian Corruption Watch (ICW) was absent from the list, <br>\nbut he claimed that he knew nothing about the list, saying that <br>\nthe decision was in the hands of the President.<\/p>\n<p>Teten has been quite outspoken in exposing corruption cases in <br>\nrecent years.<\/p>\n<p>According to the decree, the team's main tasks will be to <br>\nregister applicants and select ten of them to be submitted to the <br>\nHouse of Representatives.<\/p>\n<p>The House will later take only five of the proposed candidates <br>\nto be sworn in as members of KPTK.<\/p>\n<p>The public has waited a very long time for the establishment <br>\nof a powerful, independent anti-corruption commission, and many <br>\nhope it will be able to combat rampant corruption in Indonesia, <br>\none of the most corrupt countries in the world.<\/p>\n<p>According to the law, the commission is supposed to have the <br>\nfull authority to foil corruption cases as well as to file <br>\ncharges against corruption suspects.<\/p>",
