'Antara' warned over construction work<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The city museum and restoration agency has
\nreprimanded executives of Antara news agency for the sloppy
\nredevelopment of its old building that has partly cracked the
\nexisting buildings in the front of the block.<\/p>\n
Head of the agency's program division, Indro Kusumo, said on
\nFriday that his office sent a letter to the city's Building
\nControl Agency two weeks ago urging it to pay greater attention
\ntoward the ongoing construction work at the back part of the
\nprotected Antara buildings on Jl. Antara in Central Jakarta as it
\nhas damaged the three adjoining buildings.<\/p>\n
\"The construction has also breached our recommendation, which
\nallowed them to construct a building with a maximum height of two
\nstories, instead of four as what they are currently doing,\" Indro
\ntold The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
According to Indro, the cracks in the existing buildings, also
\noperated by Antara for its photo gallery, resulted from the
\npowerful hammering of the concrete piles for the foundation of
\nthe project.<\/p>\n
\"Cracks have been found at several parts of the protected
\nbuildings which could damage them later,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The state news agency currently occupies two separate
\nbuildings on the street, both of which are protected under the
\n1993 Gubernatorial Decree No 475 regarding old buildings in the
\ncapital.<\/p>\n
The first one was the colonial-style building which has a
\nclock tower on its top. The other is the three adjoining
\nbuildings, which have been affected by the ongoing construction
\nwork at the back.<\/p>\n
The news agency's management had demolished the annexed
\nbuilding at the back and planned to construct a separate four
\nstories building for the agency's office.<\/p>\n
Antara chief editor Parni Hadi once claimed that the
\ndemolition violated no regulation and the building that had been
\ndemolished was not protected.<\/p>\n
The agency's secretary Kardiman Soekardi recently said that
\nthe construction was based on the official recommendation issued
\nby the city's Building Control Agency even though it's only for a
\ntwo-story structure.<\/p>\n
\"But the recommendation also states that we can build a
\nmaximum four stories at the site. So we decided to make use of
\nthe recommendation,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Contacted separately, head of the agency Hartanto strongly
\nsupported the construction, saying that no violations had been
\nfound in the work so far.<\/p>\n
He also strongly denied that the museum and restoration agency
\nhad sent a letter to his office about violation on the
\nconstruction works.<\/p>\n
