'Antara-Lusa' pact hoped to help bilateral ties<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Official news agency, Antara expects a
\ncooperation agreement with its Portuguese counterpart will
\nimprove the sometimes strained relations between the two
\ncountries.<\/p>\n
Antara managing director Parni Hadi said on Friday he hoped
\nthe cooperation with the Lusa agency, announced in conjunction
\nwith the former's 61st founding anniversary which falls Saturday,
\ncould help the settlement of the East Timor problem.<\/p>\n
"The cooperation will hopefully help efforts by the Indonesian
\nand Portuguese governments to settle the East Timor question
\nthrough dialog held under the aegis of the UN secretary-
\ngeneral," Parni was quoted as saying by Antara.<\/p>\n
The cooperation agreement will be signed during a ceremony
\nmarking the anniversary at the State Palace on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Under the agreement, Antara and Lusa will exchange news and
\nplace correspondents respectively in Lisbon and Jakarta, Parni
\nsaid after closing a journalism course for military officers at
\nthe Antara building here on Friday.<\/p>\n
Indonesia declared East Timor its 27th province in 1976.
\nHowever, the United Nations has not recognized the move and
\nconsiders Lisbon the official administrator in the former
\nPortuguese colony.<\/p>\n
Also to be signed Saturday are cooperation agreements for
\nmarketing real time economic data to Indonesian business circles
\nwith Bridge of the United States, and in public relations with
\nthe Australian news agency, AAP.<\/p>\n
The agency also reported that Reuters will transfer the
\nmarketing of Reuters Business Briefing (RBB) to Antara on the
\nsame day. RBB will be marketed in Indonesia's major cities
\noutside Jakarta.<\/p>\n
At the closing of the journalism course, the Armed Forces
\ndeputy spokesman Brig. Gen. Sutan Iskandar emphasized the need
\nfor officers to have good journalistic skills. "In the
\ninformation age, the country's military faces a war of
\ninformation."<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Parni was quoted as saying he was sure that the
\nbeating of an Antara photojournalist by military personnel during
\nlast month's Special Session of the People's Consultative
\nAssembly would be brought before a military tribunal.<\/p>\n
Three photojournalists from Antara, Kompas daily and Gatra
\nnewsmagazine were beaten during a clash between hundreds of
\nstudent demonstrators and security forces on Jl. Diponegoro,
